Test Title: …Normal Consistency of Hydraulic Cement.
Test No: ……12…….
Test 12: Normal Consistency of Hydraulic Cement.
(ASTM C-187)
* Purpose: to determine the amount of water required to prepare
hydraulic cement pastes (The amount of water to react completely with
cement)
*Equipment & Materials:
1)Vicat Apparatus.
2) Plunger rod (10 + 0.05 mm )
3) Trowel.
4) Mixer.
5) Portland cement & Water.
*Materials: 650g of cement water
*Procedure:
1- Preparation of cement paste:
- Place (650 g) of cement in the mixer bowl,
- Add a measurcd quantity of water (start with 25% by weight) to the
cement.
- Allow 30 seconds for absorption.
- Mix at slow speed for 30 seconds.
- Stop the mixer for 15 seconds and scrape down the batch into the
bowl.
- Mix at medium speed for 1 minute.
2- Molding the test specimen:
-Prepare the cement paste as a ball shape.
- Toss it 6 times through a free path of about 6 inches.
- Press the ball into a large end of the conical ring (mold).
- Place the ring on its larger end on the glass plate.
- Use a trowel to slice off the excess paste at the top of the smaller end
of the mold.
- Smooth the top.( Take care Not to compress the paste.)
3- Consistency Determination:
- Center the mold on the glass plate under the rod.
- Adjust the plunger rod to be in contact with the surface of the paste.
- Set the movable indicator to the upper zero mark of the scale.
-Release the rod immediately and read the penetration after 30 sec.
4- Calculate the amount of water required for normal consistency:
- The normal consistency will be obtained when the rod penetration
settles at 10 +1 mm below the original surface in 30 s after being
released.
- Make trial pastes with varying percentages of water until the normal
consistency is obtained.
Results:
• Mass of cement = 650 g.
• Mass of water with penetration (10 ± 1mm)
after 30 sec = 230 g.

Discussion, Conclusion: The sample is not Superpose the specification.
26 ≤ N . C ≤ 33 % •
Reasons for the failure of the experiment :
1- Cement storage Conditions.
2- water temperature.
3. Place temperature.
4. Humidity rate.
5. The Cement is old.
we recommend that you pay attention to these reasons.
