Tutorial 10 Week 12
Course: CEB706 – Designed of Reinforced & Pre-Cast Concrete Structures
Tutorial: 10 - General
Q1: Biaxial Bending and axial force in Column
A rectangular column shown below is to be designed for N* = 2400 kN and bending
moments Mx* = 240 kNm and M y* = 150 kNm. Check the adequacy of the reinforcement.
(dsc = 50 mm, all bars are N32, fc’ = 40 MPa)
y
600 mm
400 mm
Q2: Slender Column
A 400 mm square column is symmetrically reinforced with 6N32 bars. The beam need to be
designed for N* = 3750 kN. If the effective length of the beam is 4000 mm, what is the
maximum moment it can carry? (dsc = 40 mm, fc’ = 40 MPa)
Q3: Losses in Prestress
Estimate the losses for a simply supported post-tensioned beam which spans 20 m and has the
400 x 900 mm rectangular cross section. The prestressing steel is contained in two cables,
each consisting of 6 super grade 7-wire strand of 12.7 mm diameter. For each cable, the area
is 600 mm2. The cables have parabolic profile with zero eccentricities at each ends and 350
mm at mid span. The concrete strength is 45 MPa and fcp can be taken as 35 MPa.
Initial prestress is 1500 kN.
You need to estimate the
i. Loss due to Elastic Deformation
ii. Loss due to friction along the tendon
iii. Anchorage Slip
iv. Shrinkage loss
v. Creep loss
vi. Loss due to relaxation of tendon
You may need to refer the sections 6.3 and 6.4 in AS3600.
