Understanding Nanotechnology Basics

Nanotechnology involves manipulating matter at the atomic or molecular scale. It has allowed rapid development of nanotechnologies over the past 20 years that are revolutionizing science and industry. Areas being transformed include energy, the environment, transportation, food safety, information technology, and medicine. The concept originated in the 1950s but tools like the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981 enabled modern nanotechnology by allowing visualization of individual atoms. Nanoparticles, nanostructures, and nanodevices are now being created and characterized using tools like scanning electron microscopes and environmental electron beam deposition. Nanotechnology holds promise for addressing problems in the environment and human illness.

NANOWORLD

NANOTECHNOLOGY
Nanoworld
• the branch of technology that deals
with dimensions and tolerances of
less than 100 nanometers, especially
the manipulation of individual atoms
and molecules.(wikipedia)
Nanoworld
• Almost ten times larger than a pollen
grain.
• Can be found in nature.
• Catalysts, minerals and other
particles and nature measured in
nanoscale
Nanoworld
• After only 20 years of research and development,
the creation of nanotechnologies and nanodevices is
occurring at a rapid rate.
• Aiding and revolutionizing many different aspects of
science and industry:
• including energy,
• environmental science,
• homeland security,
• transportation,
• food safety,
• information technology,
• and medicine.
Nanoworld
HOW IT STARTED?
The ideas and concepts behind
nanoscience and nanotechnology
started with a talk entitled “There’s
Plenty of Room at the Bottom”
Feynman described a process in
which scientists would be able to
manipulate and control individual
atoms and molecules.
Physicist Richard Feynman
It wasn't until 1981, with the
development of the scanning
tunneling microscope that could
"see" individual atoms, that modern
nanotechnology began.
Nanostructures
• Can be found in nature that can be measures on
a nanoscale.
Nanostructures
Nanotechnology
• Refers to the manipulation of the matter on an
atomic or subatomic scale.
• Other innovations are: microprocessor or strain-
resistant fabric

SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope)
-designed, fabricated, and characterized microfabricated grippers,
which were then successfully used for pick-and-place manipulation of
silicon nanowires
EEBD(Environemental Electron Beam Deposition)
-developed as a method for soldering nanotubes in electrical circuits
and constructing highly conductive three-dimensional nanostructures
