Gears Worksheet
Instructions: The students will have 5 minutes for reading the topic “Gears”, after that,
they will answer the following questions (without the book):
1. Mention the principal functions of gears.
Gears are useful in many areas of engineering, commonly in mechanical
engineering, the main function of a gear is to give or extract power from a rotational
axis.
2. The ratio of a gear system composed by a 8-cm diameter gear and a 2-cm
diameter gear is?
the ratio is determined by the distances from the center of the gear to the point of
contact, in this case it would be 4:1
3. What is involute?
Many modern gears use a special tooth profile called an involute. This profile has
the very important property of maintaining a constant speed ratio between the two
gears.
4. Mention three common applications of spur gears.
Spur gears are the most common type of gears. Spur gears are used in many
applications, like the electric screwdrivers, oscillating sprinklers, windup alarm
clocks, washing machine and clothes dryer.
5. What is the difference between helical and spur gears?
Helical gears Spur gears
Engagement is Smoothly and quietly Noisy
Can be mounted in perpendicular shafts Parallel shafts
6. Why helical gears are most used in car transmission than spur gears?
This gradual engagement makes helical gears operate much more smoothly and
quietly than spur gears. For this reason, helical gears are used in almost all car
transmissions.
7. Bevel gears can be used in 180° shafts? Explain
Because this condition make reference to two parts apart, that’s why they can be
used in 180° they’re designed by this shafts.
8. Which cases are worm gears mostly used in?
Many worm gears have an interesting property that no other gear set has: the
worm can easily turn the gear, but the gear cannot turn the worm. This is because
the angle on the worm is so shallow that when the gear tries to spin it, the friction
between the gear and the worm holds the worm in place. This feature is useful for
machines such as conveyor systems, in which the locking feature can act as a
brake for the conveyor when the motor is not turning.
9. Rack and pinion gears are slightly different from the other gears? Which is their
principal function?
Are used to convert rotation into linear motion. A perfect example of this is the
steering system on many cars.
10. In your career, in which specific situation can gears be used?
To be more specific all of them can be studied by mechanical industrial engineering
because we’re focus on the study of how engine and motors works into any
system.
