Station Auxiliaries and Services: GE Power Systems

The document summarizes the station auxiliaries and services that provide auxiliary power and support functions for a gas turbine system. It describes: 1. The components that provide auxiliary power for starting and operating the gas turbine, including power transformers, switchgear, and batteries. 2. The standby AC power requirements to maintain system readiness and allow for immediate startup, such as oil heating, panel heating, and battery charging. 3. The electrical components that provide lighting, battery charging, motor control, power distribution, and protection/alarm functions for normal and emergency operation.

Gas Turbine

Station Auxiliaries and Services

I. GENERAL

The station auxiliaries and services consist of power distribution components used to provide auxiliary pow-
er for starting and operating the gas turbine, compartment lighting, heating and cooling requirements, DC
emergency power and standby power needs. Included are auxiliary power transformers, switchgear compo-
nents, and the battery charger and battery which is the source of DC power. During normal gas turbine opera-
tion, control and power needs are furnished by the turbine driven load generator using the equipment de-
scribed herein. At the time of initial startup and during shutdown periods, standby AC power from some other
source (customer supplied) is required to maintain the gas turbine in a state of readiness.

Standby AC power is required to insure the immediate startup capability of particular turbine equipment and re-
lated control systems when the start signal is given. The standby power is required for the following functions:

1. Heating and circulating turbine lube oil at low ambient temperatures to maintain proper oil viscosity.

2. Control panel heating.

3. Generator heating.

4. Compartment heating.

5. Battery charging.

6. Exhaust frame blower motor (MS6001/7001/9001 only).

7. Operation of control compartment air conditioner during periods of high ambient temperature to
keep electrical equipment insulation within design limits.

It is recommended that the turbine be started and loaded if standby AC power is lost and not restored within
one hour.

A. Lighting

Convenience outlets, AC lighting, and emergency and DC lighting circuits are provided in the various
compartments along with a provision for additional outdoor lighting circuits. Refer to the system One-
Line diagram, in the Reference Documents section of this manual, for additional circuit information.

These instructions do not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment nor to provide for every possible
contingency to be met in connection with installation, operation or maintenance. Should further information be desired or
should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for the purchaser’s purposes the matter should be
referred to the GE Company.

B. Batteries and Charger

The batteries and the rack on which they are mounted, and the battery charger are installed in the control
compartment, or in the purchaser’s control house, or in a separately mounted enclosure.

WARNING

To avoid electrical shock, all personnel should be aware of and

should avoid the exposed battery terminals. When servicing the
cells, do not allow battery acid to come in contact with skin or cloth-
ing. In the event of acid spills on skin rinse the affected area with cool
water and neutralize with baking soda.

C. Motor Control Center (Control Compartment)

The Motor Control Center (MCC) panel, when located in the control compartment, contains ac power
distribution panelboards with associated circuit breakers, lighting transformer, and motor starters for
controlling power to other off-base components, when provided. This panel provides power distribution
for the following functions:

1. Three-phase power distribution.

2. Single-phase power distribution for heating, lighting, air conditioning and compartment conve-
nience outlets.

3. Auxiliary bus undervoltage detection and alarm, and automatic control for switching the emergency
lighting circuit to dc power in the event of normal power failure.

D. Motor Control Center (Packaged Electrical Control Compartment)

The Motor Control Center (MCC), when located in the packaged electrical control compartment, con-
sists of several bays of starter equipment. The motor control center provides for the following auxiliary
functions:

1. Three-phase power distribution for various pumps, fan motors, and heaters.

2. Single-phase power distribution for heating, lighting, air conditioning and compartment conve-
nience outlets.

3. Power distribution for emergency power to various compartment controls and panel power.

4. Auxiliary bus undervoltage detection and alarm, and automatic control for switching the emergency
lighting circuit to DC power in the event of normal power failure.

5. DC motor control for the emergency lube pump.

The motor starters are of full voltage, non-reversing, three-phase, combination-type construction; and
include an air circuit breaker, contactor, electrical interlocks, control transformer, and overload relays.
Each starter unit compartment is provided with an individual front door that is mechanically interlocked
with the unit disconnect device to prevent opening the door while the unit is energized. Means are pro-
vided for releasing this interlock for maintenance purposes.

E. Auxiliary Power Transformer (if applicable)

Auxiliary power is supplied for the gas turbine equipment (Motor Control Center) by an auxiliary power
transformer. Refer to the system One-Line diagram in the Reference Documents section for the specific
kVA rating and voltage supplied by the transformer.
