Assignment4 4

1) A two-component polyphase decomposition can be used to express a digital filter transfer function H(z) as H(z) = H0(z^2) + z^-1H1(z^2), where H0 and H1 are determined from the even and odd samples of the filter's impulse response. 2) Sampling an analog signal with frequencies of 2000Hz and 5000Hz at 8kHz and then recovering it with an ideal lowpass filter with a cutoff of 4kHz will reconstruct the 2000Hz component but remove the 5000Hz component from the recovered analog signal spectrum. 3) Linearly interpolating a signal sampled with period T to have period T/2 will

1) Consider an arbitrary digital filter with transfer function

𝐻 𝑧 = ℎ(𝑛)𝑧 −𝑛
𝑛=−∞
Perform a two-component polyphase decomposition of 𝐻 𝑧 by grouping the even-numbered samples
ℎ0 𝑛 = ℎ(2𝑛) and the odd-numbered samples ℎ1 𝑛 = ℎ 2𝑛 + 1 . Thus show that H(z) can be expressed as,

𝐻 𝑧 = 𝐻0 𝑧 2 + 𝑧 −1 𝐻1 𝑧 2
And determine 𝐻0 and 𝐻1 .

2) Given an analog signal,

x(t) = 5 cos( 2π 2000 t) + cos(2π 5000t)
is sampled at 8kHz. Sketch the recovered analog signal spectrum if an ideal lowpass filter with a cutoff
frequency of 4kHz is used to recover the original signal.
3) The sequence x(n)is obtained by sampling an analog signal with period T. From this signal a new signal is
derived having the sampling period T/2 by use of a linear interpolation method described by the equation.
𝑦 𝑛 = 𝑥(𝑛 2) ……………… n = even

𝑦 𝑛 = [𝑥((𝑛 − 1) 2) + 𝑥((𝑛 + 1) 2)]……………… n = odd

(b) Determine the spectrum of y(n), when the spectrum of x(n) is

𝑋 𝜔 =1; 0.7π ≤ 𝜔 ≤ 0.2π

Determine the frequency response of the equivalent discrete time

system when T=0.1 sec.
