COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Movie analysis
The terminal
The terminal is a movie which recreates the life of the passenger Viktor Navorski
who has been trapped in the American JFK airport for almost one year. Hence,
due to political problems related to the overthrow of the democratic regime of
the fiction country Krakozhia, Viktor’s passport and visa turns invalid as he enters
in an undetermined status in the international section within the airport. Once
there, the main character has to learn a new language and culture in order to
survive and he makes good friends with the workers and fell in love with an air
hostess. This is a comedy-drama film based in a real case of an Iranian citizen in
the Charles De Gaulle airport; however, he stayed from 1988 when his refugee
papers were stolen until 2006
Nonverbal communication:
I saw two much nonverbal communication in the movie and also saw body
gesture and face expressions used by actors in the movie .
The main example, when police officer Dixon and his team have discussion Dixon
used body expression .another example, when Dixon used indicators like he use
his finger to point people and things.when viktor try to talk to people and they
could not understand him as he used body gesture his hands to explain them
what he is saying.people change their face expressions especially viktor during
happy and sad situation his face expression changes.he also make people laugh
doing crazy thing like when he was dancing while painting walls.
Communication barrier:
There are some communication barrier in the movie.like semantic barrier that is
due to language because viktor don’t know how to speak english .there is also
culture barrier as he belongs from different culture and country he was very
confused to ask Amelia for dinner and he was very open and friendly as compare
to American people they are little bit conserve this story is closely related to the
course because it shows the acculturation process that Viktor suffers at the very
beginning when he doesn’t even know to speak English nor he manages the
American culture and modes. There are many intercultural challenges described
in the film, especially those related to international intercultural interaction
rather than national. Despite of being in New York where many cultures cohabit
such as Indian, Mexican or Afro-American; the case of Viktor is more close to an
international challenge. Indeed Eastern Europe culture is not well known among
American people, which makes understanding even harder. Viktor’s culture is
shown as a more masculinity culture due to his reaction when the woman Amelia
invites him to have a lunch or how he prepares to impress her in several occasions
as it was used one century ago. In addition, Eastern Europe culture is depicted as
a more collectivist culture because of Viktor’s answer when he realizes that his
government has been overthrown, and also when he is asked to say to be afraid
in order to be treated as a refugee. Furthermore, Viktor acts with high uncertainty
There is also physical barrier in the movie example , when viktor accidently
throw food on the floor and started cleaning it by himself .cleaning incharge
janitor Gupta try to call his name and stop him because of distance and noice he
could not listen him quickly. There is organizational barrier as Dixon is incharge
he was obessed for his promotion due to his cruel rules his team members don’t
communicate freely with him as he order them to not allow viktor to leave air
port but they don’t listen to him due to miss communication there is
psychological barrier also when viktor lie to Amelia about his identity and due to
is communication between them she assumed that he was criminal . another
language barrier occurs when a Russian person try to take uncertified medicine
with him for his ill father Dixon and his team could not understand him viktor
translate them and tell them he has to take medicine for goat he helped Russian
person to take medicine for his father by translating father as goat.
Important scenes:
1.when viktor meet Dixon first time he told him he could not go back to his
country nor he can enter into America Dixon also had taken his passport.
2.when Dixon indirectly say viktor to leave airport so he can get rid of him he
started to spy him to see he will or not.
3.when viktor met Amelia First time and when viktor had been hired by an airport
contractor and paid under the table after he impulsively remodeled a wall at the
renovation zone.
4. when a Russian person try to take uncertified medicine with him for his ill
father Dixon and his team could not understand him viktor translate them and
tell them he has to take medicine for goat he helped Russian person to take
medicine for his father by translating father as goat.
5. One day, Dixon pulls Amelia aside and questions whether she knows Viktor's
true situation. Amelia confronts Viktor at his makeshift home, where he shows
her that the Planters peanut can contains a copy of the "A Great Day in Harlem"
photograph. His late father was a jazz enthusiast who had discovered the famous
portrait in a Hungarian newspaper in 1958, and vowed to collect the autographs
of all 57 of the musicians featured on it. He died before he could get the last one,
from tenor saxophonist Benny Golson. Viktor has come to New York to do so.
6. After nine months, his friends wake Viktor with the news that the war in
Krakozhia has ended, and he gets a green stamp, allowing him to leave the
airport. Amelia also asked her "friend"—actually a married government official
with whom she had been having an affair—to get Viktor a one-day emergency
visa to fulfill his dream, but Viktor is disappointed to learn she has renewed her
relationship with the man during this process. Moreover, Viktor finds out that
Dixon must sign the visa. Seizing the opportunity, Dixon threatens to cause
trouble for Viktor's friends, most seriously by deporting janitor Gupta (Kumar
Pallana) back to India to potentially face a charge of assaulting a police officer.
Unwilling to let this happen, Viktor finally agrees to return home to Krakozhia.
When Gupta learns of this, however, he runs in front of a plane as it taxies to the
terminal, resulting in his deportation, effectively taking the burden off Viktor. The
delay gives Viktor enough time to get into the city. Dixon attempts to have his
officers detain and arrest Viktor, but they instead let him leave the airport.
7.Viktor arrives in New York at the hotel where Benny Golson is performing and
finally collects the last autograph. Then he gets in a taxi, telling the driver, "I am
going home."
