Re:
Dear Scholarship Committee,

My name is Ruby Trand and I am very excited to be graduating in June of 2020 from Pemberton
Secondary! I have lived in Pemberton my whole life and in grade five I chose to be enrolled in
the French Immersion program and have continued through it up until now. The purpose was to
challenge my brain and expand my horizon for employment and travel. I have also been on the
80%-90% honour roll for every year of highschool.

After graduation, I hope to continue into post-secondary education at the University of British
Columbia in Vancouver beginning in September of 2020, where I plan to get a degree in Dental
Hygiene. With this degree I will have the opportunity to work in rural areas which are in need of
this service. I found this passion through my volunteer work at the Pemberton Valley Dental
Clinic, where I discovered my interest in teaching and helping people with their oral health.
Through my work at the clinic I also built more relationships and connections within the
community.

I have been part of the Leadership course at my school every year, where I have contributed by
taking a lead in organizing community building events for our school, for example engaging
activities for the holidays. This year I took a leadership role in the organization of the Mexican
Legion Dinner to fundraise for prom, by coming up with the list of food and the quantities we
needed, along with helping prep it with my stepmom. I have also enjoyed being part of athletic
leadership through which I've had the chance to score keep games and the honour of coaching
the grade eight girls volleyball team this year. With coaching, I taught the girls some basic skills
but was also able to take on a mentorship role with them.

Throughout highschool I have played basketball, soccer and volleyball every year, where I have
earned MVP awards and developed a passion for team sports. For me the school sports programs
have been a major highlight of my highschool experience and I am so grateful for the memories,
confidence and teamwork skills that I have gained. I have also been paddling dragon boat with
the Laoyam Eagles for six years and I hope to continue paddling dragon boat at UBC in the fall.
Through paddling I had the opportunity to work as a canoe camp coordinator; this job taught me
responsibility and collaboration skills. Through this work I hope to have influenced the youth of
the community by helping them find a passion for paddling.

I hope to work as a Canoe Camp Coordinator again this summer to raise money for university.
However this scholarship will be beneficial in helping me reach my goal of becoming a dental
hygienist. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider my application!

Sincerely, Ruby Trand
