3D Printing: Resins and Recycling Techniques

The document discusses different types of resins used in 3D printing, including DLP resin, silicone resins, and epoxy resins. Silicone resins can be recycled at home by grinding, preparing a mold, and mixing with fresh silicone. They offer heat resistance, weatherability, hardness, water repellency, and dielectric properties. Epoxy resins contain epoxide groups and offer high strength, low shrinkage, adhesion, insulation, and chemical/solvent resistance, though they can yellow and trap air. Both resin and fiber components of epoxy composites can potentially be recovered and reused through a proprietary recycling process.

In the beginning write about 3d printing and its future use , then:

UV polymerization technology is designed to work with premium liquid resins, and also
with composites in the form of pastes that contain high levels of ceramic, metal, fibers,
or nano-particles

DLP RESIN

DLP stands for digital light processing, and is a type of vat polymerization.

Vat polymerization 3D printing technologies make use of a (liquid) photopolymer
resin which is able to cure (solidify) under a light source.

Silicone Resins
Silicone has many uses in medical, commercial and industrial situations being a heat resistant,
durable, stable and relatively inexpensive polymer. Silicone is a type of rubber offering some
very useful properties that make it ideal for use in a wide range of industries. It offers thermal
stability across extremes of temperatures, from around minus 148° F to about 482° F. Silicone
repels water and creates watertight seals, it has anti-microbial properties, is hardwearing,
resistant to environmental effects such as oxygen and UV light and its low thermal conductivity
makes it ideal for use in fire and heat protection. The high tear strength, electrical conductivity
and the flame-retardant properties of silicone make it a safe product for use at home, in the
office and in a factory. Popular uses for silicone rubber products at home include baking and
food storage, household electronic products, personal care products, clothing and footwear,
arts and crafts, mold making, children’s toys, building , hardware and lubricants.

Silicone resins used to be created with sodium silicate and various chlorosilanes, but
now they are often formed with the less reactive tetraethoxysilane or ethyl polysilicate
and several disiloxanes. They have good thermal and oxidative stability and are flexible
and water repellent. Silicone resins form hard films because of their three-dimensional
network structure. They are used for rubber, laminates, encapsulated resins,
defoamers, and water-resistant applications.

Silicone resins are a type of silicone material which is formed by branched, cage-

like oligosiloxanes with the general formula of RnSiXmOy,

 Steps to recycling silicone

One can recycle silicone at home with a few basic pieces of equipment and some
simple techniques. Many people like to recycle silicone rubber they have available
around the house instead of throwing it in the trash. Recycling silicone involves grinding
it down, preparing a mold and then mixing the shredded silicone granules with fresh
silicone.

Properties when used as resins

Heat resistance
Able to withstand temperatures up to 250°C.

Weatherability
Good resistance to UV rays.

Hardness
They form hard films due to their three-dimensional network structure.

Water repellency
They form films with excellent water repellency (especially those that contain methyl groups).

Dielectric properties
They show excellent dielectric properties across a wide range of temperatures.

STRUCTURE
Epoxy Resins
Epoxy resins, also called polyepoxides, are a type of reactive prepolymers and
polymers which contain epoxide groups. They have excellent chemical and heat
resistance and strong adhesion properties.

They are used for laminates, adhesives, flooring, linings, propellers, and surface
coatings.

used in the manufacture of adhesives, plastics, paints, coatings, primers and sealers, flooring
and other products and materials that are used in building and construction applications

Key Properties of Epoxy Resins

Epoxies offer:

 High strength
 Low Shrinkage
 Excellent adhesion to various substrates
 Effective electrical insulation
 Chemical and solvent resistance, and
 Low cost and low toxicity

Epoxies are easily cured, and they are also compatible with most substrates.

DISADVANTAGES

The resin can yellow if exposed to excessive sunlight

also is prone to trapping air bubbles or dust. These bubbles usually appear after it has dried and
settled.

CAN EPOXY RESIN BE RECYCLED

Connora claims that using a "proprietary, low energy recycling process" both resin and fibre

(e.g. carbon, glass, Kevlar) can be recovered from epoxy composite products manufactured
using its Recyclamine hardeners. The recovered epoxy and fibre components can then be re-
sold, re-used or repurposed

STRUCTURE
Epoxy resins form an important and versatile class of cross-linkable polymers made from
monomers containing at least two strained-ring groups called oxiranes. These rings contain one
oxygen and two carbon atoms and are attached to a large variety of other aliphatic or aromatic
organic molecules.
