Nurse Response to Finger Amputation

The nurse would clean and dress the injury to minimize bleeding and protect the finger. They would also elevate the hand and immobilize it with a splint. If the fingertip was cut off, the nurse would gently clean the severed part and place it in a watertight bag on ice without direct contact to avoid further damage, in preparation for reattachment if possible.

ACTIVITY #2

Discussion Question:
A nurse employed in an industrial plant is called to an accident site in the plant at which an employee
amputated his index finger on a saw. What should the nurse do?

Well I think the nurse will clean the injury, if possible, and cover it with a lightly compressive sterile dressing to
minimize bleeding and protect the injured finger then elevate the injured hand to minimize swelling as well as
immobilizing the affected hand and wrist with a short splint.

However, if the fingertip is completely cut off, the nurse will gently clean the amputated part with water or, if
possible, with sterile saline solution over it in a moistened gauze wrap then will place it in a watertight bag. Same
bag will then be place on an ice in a sealed container or another watertight bag and must make sure that the
amputated part will not be in direct contact with an ice to avoid further damage.
