Relative Humidity Lab

The document describes an experiment to measure relative humidity (RH) in different locations using a sling psychrometer. Students are asked to make predictions about which location - their classroom, hallway or outside - will have the highest RH. They then use the psychrometer to measure the dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures in each location and calculate the RH percentage. Students analyze the results by listing the locations from highest to lowest RH and explaining why RH was highest in that location. They are also asked to consider how factors like weather could affect RH measurements if the experiment was repeated, and how RH affects both individuals and the weather.

Relative Humidity…or Is this a “good-” or a “bad hair day”?

Question & Predictions

**But first….What is relative humidity (RH)?

**Where do you think the RH is the highest—our classroom, the hallway, or outside? (circle one)

Why?_________________________________________________________________________

Procedure
You will use a “sling psychrometer” to calculate the relative humidity for different locations. There are
two thermometers on a psychrometer. The one with the cloth “sleeve” is called the wet-bulb
thermometer. The one without the sock is called the dry-bulb thermometer.

1. Wet the sleeve on the wet-bulb thermometer by putting water on your fingers and wetting the
sleeve until it is damp—NOT soaking, just moistened.
2. Swing the sling psychrometer around for 2-4 minutes.
3. Read the Celsius temperatures for both thermometers and record in the data table below.
4. Subtract the wet-bulb temperature from the dry-bulb temperature to get the
wet-bulb Depression, record in data table.
5. Use the attached table to determine the percent of Relative Humidity.

Analyze
1. How did evaporation of the water from the wet-bulb differ between humid and less-humid air?

2. List the locations in order of their relative humidity—Highest to lowest.

3. Why do you think the relative humidity was highest in that location?

4. If you were to do this same experiment in a week…
a. What would determine or affect your results for the relative humidity in these same
locations?

b. What are 3 other locations in/around DMS you would want to test the RH for?

iii. Spot 2-_________________ WHY?__________________________________

v. Spot 3-_________________ WHY?__________________________________

5. How does RH affect Y-O-U? How do you think relative humidity affects the WEATHER?
