Directions
The purpose of this activity is to get students to echo, audiate, and improvise
rhythms in duple meter.
Perform the chant, followed by four-beat rhythm patterns for students to
echo. These could be on a neutral syllable “bah”, or using your rhythm solfege
system (ta and ti-ti, du and du-de, etc.)
In another lesson, scatter the dinosaurs around the room face down. Students
walk to the macrobeat as you chant the words (I like to throw in movement
directions: Can you stomp like a big heavy dinosaur? Can you walk softly like a
small dinosaur?) On the words “I think this is how it goes,” students pick up a
card and read the direction: Echo, Audiate, or Improvise. You chant any four-
beat rhythm pattern to students, and students echo, audiate (say the pattern
in their head), or improvise based on what their card says.
After 3 or 4 rhythm patterns, students place their card face down and
repeat! Have fun!
