(From NSCP 2015 TABLE 207D.1-1) : Analysis of Wind Load

1) The document analyzes wind loads on a rooftop structure using steps from the NSCP 2015 code. 2) It determines the structure is in Occupancy Category III with a basic wind speed of 69.444 m/s and Exposure Category C. 3) Wind load parameters are calculated including directionality, topographic, and gust effect factors. The velocity pressure is determined to be 3.61 kPa. 4) Tributary wind force areas are identified and forces of 5.42 kN and 10.83 kN are calculated. 5) The total weight of the tarpaulin and frame is calculated to be 0.73 kN.

ANALYSIS OF WIND LOAD

(from NSCP 2015 TABLE 207D.1-1)

Steps to determine wind loads on MWFRS rooftop (Open Roof) equipment and other structure.
1. Determine occupancy category of building or other structure, see Table 103-1

OCCUPANCY CATEGORY III (SPECIAL OCCUPANCY STRUCTURES)

2. Determine the basic wind speed, V, for the applicable risk category, see Figure
207A.5-IA, B or C

3. Determine wind load parameters:

 Wind directionality factor, Kd, see Section 207A.6 and Table 2017A.6-1
Kd = 0.85

 Exposure Category B, C or D, see Section 207A.7

EXPOSURE CATEGORY C

 Topographic factor, Kzt, see Section 207A.8 and Figure 207A.8-1

Kzt = 1.0

 Gust Effect Factor, G, see Section 207A.9

G = 0.85

4. Determine velocity pressure exposure coefficient, Kz or Kh, see Section 207D.2-1

Kz = 1.04
5. Determine velocity pressure qz or qh, see Equation 207D.3-1

If z = 12;
(In N/m2)
1.0)(0.85)(69.444)2
N/m2

6. Determine force coefficients, Cf:

By interpolation:

x = S/h y = B/S

0.9 1.55

0.75 Cf

1
0.7 1.65

Cf = 1.63

7. Calculate wind force, F:

Using z = 12

COMPUTATION OF WIND FORCES

P = 3.61 kPa (from wind load pressure)
Force, P1 Force, P2
P1 = P x AT1 P2= P x AT2
P1 = 3.61 kPa x 1.5 m2 P2 = 3.61 kPa x 3 m2
P1 = 5.42 kN P2= 10.83 kN

Figure 3. Tributary Area for Tarpaulin

WEIGHT OF THE TARPAULIN, WTarp

Unit Weight of Tarpaulin = 0.25 kg/m2

Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s2

WTarp = Unit Weight of tarpaulin x Gravitational Acceleration x Area of Face

WTarp = 0.25 kg/m2 x (9.81 m/s2) x (9 x 2)m

WTarp = 44.15 N or 0.04 kN

WEIGHT OF FRAME, Wframe

Theoretical Mass of L40 x 40 x 3 = 1.84 kg/m

Length of Frame = 1.25 m (12) + 9 m (1) + 1 m (14) = 38 m
Wframe = Mass of L40 x 40 x 3 x Acceleration due to gravity x Length of Frame
Wframe = 1.84 kg/m x 9.81 m/s2 x 38 m
Wframe = 685.92 N
Wframe = 0.69kN

W = WTARP + W FRAME
W= 0.04 kN + 0.69 kN
W= 0.73 kN
