Alcohols are organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl functional group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom. Primary alcohols contain the -OH group attached to a carbon atom bonded to only hydrogen or carbon atoms. Secondary alcohols have the -OH group attached to a carbon atom that is bonded to two other carbon atoms. Tertiary alcohols have the -OH group attached to a carbon atom bonded to three other carbon atoms.
