Energy Efficiency in Power
Utility
• Power plant produces electrical energy and also consumes a substantial amount
of energy in the form of auxiliary consumption required for various plant
equipments and services
• In any thermal power plant
•Energy Inputs Fuel i.e. Coal or Natural Gas Electrical Power (Aux. Power)
•Energy Output Electrical Power
•Efficiency Parameters
Heat rate Kcal / KWh
Auxiliary Power Consumption %
Energy Conservation in Power Utility
is achieved mainly by
• Operating the equipments at maximum
efficiency and
• Reduction of auxiliary Power consumption
• Auxiliary Power Consumption in Thermal
Power Plant is major source of energy
consumption.
• During the financial year 2009-10 total
generation by coal & Lignite plants was
535433 Mus (80439.5 MW Capacity) with PLF
77.53%.
• Auxiliary Power Consumption was 8.44%.
• If this APC gets reduced only by 0.44% then it
is equivalent to fresh capacity addition of
approx. 27 MW without any investment.
Trombay Station of Tata Power Co. Ltd
achieved lowest auxiliary power
consumption (4.79%) in the country.
Among Central Sector Stations, Simhadri
STPS of NTPC achieved the lowest auxiliary
power consumption (5.45%).
Among State Sector Stations, Bellary
TPS of KPCL achieved the lowest
auxiliary power consumption (5.46%).
Among different capacity groups, the lowest
auxiliary power consumption was 6.37% in 500
MW group.
Requirement of works power with load
CERC Norms of APC
For 200 MW - 9% with Cooling Tower
- 8.5% without CT
For 500 MW - 7.5% with CT and TDBFP
- 7% without CT and TDBFP
- 9% with CT and MDBFP
- 8.5% without CT and MDBFP
Factors Affecting Auxiliary Power
Consumption
- Unit Generation and load Pattern
- Operation of Plant Auxiliaries
- Service auxiliary such as Illumination , air
conditioning
- Unit Startup / shutdown
Unit startup and shutdown time
• High cycle time leads to excess Oil Consumption, [Link] &
DM water consumption & Generation loss.
• Per hour delay in Start up or Shut down cycle time increase
Auxiliary power consumption by 1000 KWh & Oil consumption by 8 KL, DM
make up by 32 Tons.
• Generation Loss by 0.25 Million Units /Hour.
• High Cost of Generation.
• Wide variation in process parameters.
• Unreliable operation

Steps suggested for APC reduction
• Energy Management System : Conducting energy audit in a structured
manner and implementation of action plan & Check Audits
• Other Thrust Areas for Energy Conservation
:•On line monitoring of power consumption of various auxiliaries through
OLEMS
•Monitoring the power consumption of each equipment before and after
overhaul
•Introduction of latest state of the art technologies on specific systems
without waiting for R&M of the whole power plant
•Better O&M practices
•Introduction of VFDs (wherever flow control is achieved by inlet guide
vane, damper or valve)
•Energy efficient coating of the pumps
