SECTION – 2800: EXPANSION /SEPRATION / ISOLATION JOINTS
2800.1 GENERAL
Expansion joints in concrete and masonry structures shall be provided
at specified places, as per details indicated in drawings. Materials and
types of joints shall be as specified hereinafter or as per approved
manufacturer’s specifications. In the case of liquid retaining structures,
additional precautions shall be taken to prevent leakage of liquids as
may be specified on the drawings or as directed by Engineer.
It is the responsibility of the contractor to provide all labour, materials
and tools and plants for supply and installation of joints, testing and
protection etc. .All materials are to be procured from approved
manufacturers; the contractor must have proven record of satisfactory
supply of jointing material of similar make or shape. Engineer may
demand test certificates for the material and / or instruct the contractor
to get them tested in an approved laboratory free of cost to the owner.
Joints shall be formed true to line, level, shape, dimension and quality
as per drawings and specifications. Jointing procedure, including laps
shall be as per manufacturer’s recommendation and / or revised, if
necessary, by engineer. Prior approval of the method of forming joints
should be obtained from engineer before starting the work.
2800.2 TYPE OF JOINT FILLER
Joint filler shall be either bitumen board or expanded polystyrene
board.
2800.2.1 Bitumen board
Bitumen impregnated fibreboard of approved manufacturer and
conforming to IS: 1838 may be used as filler for expansion joint. It must
be durable, water proof, compressible and posses a high degree of
rebound quality. The dimension of the board should be equal to that of
the joint to be formed. It should be manufactured in one piece,
matching the dimension of the joint and not prepared by cutting smaller
pieces to size from larger boards at site. At the exposed end the joint
shall be sealed with approved sealing compound to a depth of at least
25 mm after application of an approved primer as shown on the
drawings. The sealing compound and the primer shall be applied as
specified by the manufacturer or as directed by engineer.

2800.2.2 Expanded Polystyrene Board
If required, commercial quality of expanded polystyrene products,
commonly used for thermal insulation, can also be used as filler
materials in the expansion joints.
The thickness of expanded polystyrene board may vary from 12 mm to
50 mm. The material shall be procured from manufacturers as
approved by Engineer. The method of installation shall be similar to
that recommended by manufacturers for fixing on cold storage walls. A
coat of bitumen paint may have to be applied to the bitumen against
which concrete will be placed.
2800.3 JOINT SEALING STRIPS
Where shown on drawings, joint sealing strips shall be provided at
construction, expansion and isolated joints as a continuous diaphragm
to contain fitted material and /or to exclude passage of water or other
material into or out of the structure. Sealing strips shall be either
metallic such as G.I., Aluminium or copper, or non-metallic such as
rubber or PVC.
Sealing strips shall not have any longitudinal joints and shall be
produced and installed in large practicable lengths having a minimum
number of transverse joints. Joints should be made watertight by
suitable measures at no extra cost to the client.
2800.3.1 Metal Sealing Strips
Metal sealing strips shall be of either galvanised iron, aluminium or
copper and shall be formed in straight, U-shaped, Z – shaped or any
other approved shape and of thickness as indicated in drawings and
as instructed by Engineer.
Transverse joints shall be gas welded using brass rods and approved
flux and will be tested by an approved method to establish that they are
leak proof. In case of test failure of the joint, longer lap lengths and
different method of brazing , which will render it leak proof, shall be
adopted by the contractor without any additional cost to the owner.
The edges shall be neatly crimped and bent to ensure proper bond with
concrete.
a) G.I. Strips
G.I. strips shall be minimum 16 swg thick and 150 mm wide,
unless specified otherwise. Standard of galvanising shall be as
per relevant Indian Standard for heavy duty work. The strip

shall be strong, durable, without any rust or grease. At the
joints, overlapping should be for a minimum length of 50 mm.
b) Aluminium Strips
Aluminium strips shall be minimum 18 swg thick and 300 mm
wide, unless specified otherwise and shall conform to IS:737 of
19000 grade or 31000 grade (Designation as per IS:6051). A
minimum lap of 50 mm in length is required at the joints.
c) Copper Strips
Copper strips shall be of minimum 18 swg in thickness and 300
mm wide, unless specified otherwise and shall conform to
relevant Indian Standards.
They should be cleaned thoroughly before use to expose fresh
surface, without any reduction in gauge. A minimum lap of 50
mm in length is required at the joints.
2800.3.2 Non-metallic Sealing Strips
These will normally be a rubber of PVC and can have any combination
of the following shapes:
Plain
Central bulb
Dumb bell or flattened ends
Ribbed and corrugated wings
V – shaped
Transverse joints will be allowed only under unavoidable
circumstances and with the specific approval of Engineer. While
jointing, particular care shall be taken to match the central bulbs and
the edges accurately. All joints in rubber seals shall be vulcanised.
a) Rubber Sealing Strips
Minimum thickness of rubber sealing strips shall be 8 mm and
minimum width 230 mm. Actual size and shape will be as
shown in the drawings and / or as directed by Engineer. The
material will be of natural rubber and be resistant to corrosion,
abrasion, tear and also to attacks from acids, alkalis and other
chemicals likely to be encountered during use of structures and
weathering action. Physical properties will be generally as given
below:
Specific gravity - 1.1 to 1.15

Specifications RVNL
Shore Hardness - 65A to 75 A
Tensile strength - 2.5-3 kg/sqm
Maximum Safe Continuous
Temperature - 75 degree C
Ultimate Elongation - Not less than 350%
Actual requirements may be slightly different as decided by
Engineer.
b) PVC Sealing Strips
Minimum thickness of PVC sealing strips will be 10 mm and
minimum width 230 mm. Actual size and shape will be as
shown in drawings and / or as directed by Engineer. The
material should be of good quality Polyvinyl Chloride highly
resistant to tearing, abrasion and corrosion as well as chemicals
likely to come in contact with during use. Physical properties will
generally be as follows:
Specific gravity - 1.3 to 1.35
Shore Hardness - 60A to 80 A
Tensile strength - 1-1.5 kg/sq cm
Maximum Safe Continuous
Temperature - 70 degree C
Ultimate Elongation - Not less than 275%
Actual requirements which will be decided by Engineer, may
vary slightly.
2800.4 BITUMEN COMPOUND
When so directed, the gap in the expansion joints should be thoroughly
cleaned and bitumen compound laid as per manufacturer’s
specifications. The compound to be shall be of approved manufacturer
and shall conform the requirements of IS:1834.
2800.5 METAL COVER STRIPS
Metal cover strips, made from aluminium or mild steel sections as
shown in drawings shall conform to relevant technical specifications.
