The Combustion Engine - Edgar Sheng
The first spark-ignition internal combustion engine was created by French engineer,
J.J Etienne Lenoir in 1859.
The internal combustion engine revolutionised travel by enabling us to travel further
and at a much faster time. Instead of horses drawing carriages or taking a few months
to cross an ocean on a boat, we now can either drive to our destination with ease or
catch an aeroplane across the globe at our leisure. The combustion engine also
inspired the creation of even more powerful engines and contraptions to allow even
faster travel and more fuel efficiency. Such examples include the creation of monster
engines such as the V24 which houses 24 cylinders/pistons, and the turbo
modification which allows maximum energy efficiency.
Although the first fully functioning spark-ignition combustion engine was created by
J.J Etienne Lenoir, there were many attempts and failures made by other engineers to
create the engine. The concept of the fist combustion engine was first experimented
with by a Dutch physicist name Christian Huygens during 1680. Sixteen years after
Lenoir came Nikolaus Otto, a German engineer who created and patented the modern
- day combustion engine in1876.
Many have foretold the end of the combustion engine since corporate powerhouses
such as Tesla Motors (Elon Musk) came in and created high functioning electric
motors and battery cells. The future of the combustion engine can go two ways,
following in Tesla Motor’s footsteps, we can continue mass-producing hybrid engines,
which are super-efficient, or continue developing larger and more powerful engines by
attaching more cylinders for maximum energy output. Currently, many are
contemplating the use of turbocharged engines into conventional cars although its fuel
efficiency is relatively poor.
