Total marks : 30
1. Calculate the safe stopping distance on a level road for a design speed of 90 kmph
For a) Two-way traffic on a two-lane road
b) Two-way traffic on a single lane road
Take the total reaction time 2.5 sec and the co-efficient of friction as 0.35.
2. Calculate the minimum sight distance required to avoid head-on collision of two trucks
approaching form the opposite direction at 70 kmph and 85 kmph.
Take the total reaction time 2.5 sec, the co-efficient of friction as 0.35 and a brake
efficiency of 40% in both the cases.
3. A highway designer who is designing a highway with a descending gradient of 2.5% is given
the frictional co-efficient to be 0.37 and reaction time to be 2 sec. For what design speed,
should he design the highway.
4. The design speed of a road is 50 mph. given the friction co-efficient to be 0.35 and reaction
to be 2.5 sec. Given he is driving at night, calculate the distance visible to the driver. Also,
calculate the intermediate stopping distance.
5. Two cars A and B are plying on a one-way traffic road. A wants to overtake the vehicle B. A is
moving at 60 kmph and 45 kmph. The average acceleration during the process may be
assumed as 0.99 m/sec2. Calculate
a) The safe overtaking sight distance.
b) What is the minimum length of overtaking zone?
c) Draw a neat sketch showing position of sign posts.
6. The radius of a horizontal circular curve is 150m. The design speed is 60 kmph and the
design coefficient of lateral friction is 0.15.
a) Calculate the super-elevation required if full lateral friction is assumed to develop
b) Calculate the co-efficient of friction needed if no super-elevation is provided.
