KMMC114 Western History & Analysis, Coursework 2019-20

Choose ONE question from the following options and write a 3000-word essay or produce an equivalent

research project (see Course Handbook for further details).

1. Why are the career and work of [composer*] significant for understanding Baroque or Classical Era

music? Refer to at least three musical examples from different genres as part of your answer.

*Choose from: Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (Early or Middle Period only).

2. Discuss the relationship between music and text in any one of the following works: Monteverdi’s

L’Orfeo, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s The Creation, Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

3. Discuss the musical characteristics and historical significance of the [genre*]. If you wish, you may

choose a genre that was prevalent during both Baroque and Classical Periods (e.g. Opera,

Concerto), and discuss how that genre evolved from one era into the next. Illustrate your answer

with at least three musical examples by different composers.

*Choose from: Madrigal, Opera, Oratorio, Concerto, Symphony, String Quartet.

All written work (essay & abstract) should be word-processed in double-spaced Arial or Calibri font,

size 11; using the KM MLA Style (see attached guideline for details).

Deadlines

Friday 31st January 2020: Email choice of question and a 300-word abstract briefly describing your

approach to your chosen topic.

Friday 28th February 2020: Email an annotated bibliography, listing a minimum of 5 reference sources

(NOT counting scores), including a brief discussion of the relevance of each source for your assignment.

Friday 17th April: Email final assignment.

All submissions are due to be emailed to the address [email protected] (NOT directly to the lecturer,

although you may CC them in your email). There will be a penalty of 2 MDX points for late submission for

until a week after the deadline. Thereafter it will be considered a non-submission.
