ESE - Engineering Services Exam
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Engineering Services
Examination as a combined competitive examination for recruitment to the
services or posts of Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.
The exam is conducted for selection engineers for Government of India's
engineering organizations, such as Indian Railway Service of Engineers
(IRSE), Central Engineering Service (CES), Indian Ordnance Factories
Services (IOFS), Military Engineering Services (MES), and others.
UPSC General Studies & Engineering Aptitude Syllabus
The question paper is of objective type, common to all candidates. The
duration is 2 hours and maximum marks is 200.
The questions from the following topics are covered:
1. Current issues of national and international importance relating to
social, economic and industrial development
2. Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability
3. Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis
4. General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety

6. Basics of Energy and Environment : Conservation, environmental
pollution and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental
impact assessment
7. Basics of Project Management
8. Basics of Material Science and Engineering
9. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their
applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance
and technology based education.
10. Ethics and values in Engineering profession
Marks for each topic may range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in
the paper.
Paper I
1. Thermodynamics, Cycles and IC Engines
Basic concepts, Open and Closed systems. Heat and work. Zeroth, First and
Second Law, Application to non-Flow and Flow processors. Entropy,
Availability, Irreversibility and Tds relations. Claperyron and real
gas equations, Properties of ideal gases and vapours. Standard vapour,
Gas power and Refrigeration cycles. Two stage compressor. C-I and S.I.
Engines. Pre-ignition, Detonation and Diesel-knock, Fuel injection
and Carburation, Supercharging. Turboprop and Rocket engines,
Engine Cooling, Emission & Control, Flue gas analysis, Measurement of

2. Heat Transfer and Refrigeration and Airconditioning
Modes of heat transfer. One dimensional steady and unsteady conduction.
Composite slab and Equivalent Resistance. Heat dissipation from extended
surfaces, Heat exchangers, Overall heat transfer coefficient, Empirical
correlations for heat transfer in laminar and turbulent flows and for free and
forced Convection, thermal boundary layer over a flat plate. Fundamentals of
diffusive and connective mass transfer, Black body and basic concepts in
Radiation, Enclosure theory, Shape factor, Net work analysis. Heat pump and
Refrigeration cycles and systems, Refrigerants. Condensers, Evaporates and
Expansion devices, Psychrometry, Charts and application to air
conditioning, Sensible heating and cooling, Effective temperature, comfort
indices, Load calculations, Solar refrigerations, controls, Duct design.
3. Fluid Mechanics
Properties and classification of fluids, Manometry, forces on immersed
surfaces, Center of pressure, Buoyancy, Elements of stability of floating
bodies. Kinematics and Dynamics. Irrotational and incompressible. Inviscid
flow. Velocity potential, Pressure field and Forces on immersed
bodies. Bernoulli’s equation, Fully developed flow through pipes, Pressure
drop calculations, Measurement of flow rate and Pressure drop. Elements
of boundary layer theory, Integral approach, Laminar and tubulent
flows, Separations. Flow over weirs and notches. Open channel flow,
Hydraulic jimp. Dimensionless numbers, Dimensional analysis, Similitude
and modelling. One-dimensional isentropic flow, Normal shock wave,
Flow through convergent - divergent ducts, Oblique shock-wave, Rayleigh
and Fanno lines.
4. Fluid Machinery and Steam Generators
Performance, Operation and control of hydraulic Pump and impulse an
reaction Turbines, Specific speed, Classification. Energy transfer,
Coupling, Power transmission, Steam generators Fire-tube and water-tube
boilers. Flow of steam through Nozzles and Diffusers, Wetness and
condensation. Various types of steam and gas Turbines, Velocity diagrams.
Partial admission. Reciprocating, Centrifugal and axial flow Compressors,
Multistage compression, role of Mach Number, Reheat, Regeneration,
Efficiency, Governance.

candidates applying for Civil Services Examination and Indian
Forest Service Examination, and acts as a screening mechanism for selection

Paper - II
1. Thermodynamics, Gas Dynamics and Turbine:
Basic concept of First –law and second law of Thermodynamics; concept of
entropy and reversibility; availability and unavailability and irreversibility.
Classification and properties of fluids; incompressible and compressible fluids
flows; effect of Mach number and compressibility; continuity momentum and
energy equations; normal and oblique shocks; one dimensional isentropic
flow; flow or fluids in duct with frictions that transfer.
Flow through fans, blowers and compressors; axial and centrifugal flow
configuration; design of fans and compressors; single problems compresses
and turbine cascade; open and closed cycle gas turbines; work done in the
gas turbine; reheat and regenerators.
2. Heat Transfer:
Conduction heat transfer- general conduction equation - Laplace, Poisson
and Fourier equations; Fourier law of conduction; one dimensional steady
state heat conduction applied to simple wall, solid and hollow cylinder &
spheres.
Convection heat transfer- Newton’s law of convection; free and forces
convection; heat transfer during laminar and turbulent flow of an
incompressible fluid over a flat plate; concepts of Nusselt number,
hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer their thickness; Prandtl number;
analogy between heat and momentum transfer- Reynolds, Colbum, Prandtl
analogies; heat transfer during laminar and turbulent flow through horizontal
tubes; free convection from horizontal and vertical plates.
Black body radiation - basic radiation laws such as Stefan-Boltzman, Planck
distribution, Wein’s displacement etc.

3. I .C. Engines:
Classification, thermodynamic cycles of operation; determination of break
power, indicated power, mechanical efficiency, heat balance sheet,
interpretation of performance characteristics, petrol, gas and diesel engines.
Combustion in SI and CI engines, normal and abnormal combustion; effect of
working parameters on knocking, reduction of knocking; Forms of
combustion chamber for SI and CI engines; rating of fuels; additives;
emission.
Different systems of IC engines- fuels; lubricating; cooling and transmission
systems. Alternate fuels in IC engines.
4. Steam Engineering:
Steam generation- modified Rankine cycle analysis; Modern steam boilers;
steam at critical and supercritical pressures; draught equipment; natural and
artificial draught; boiler fuels solid, liquid and gaseous fuels. Steam turbines -
principle; types; compounding; impulse and reaction turbines; axial thrust.
Steam nozzles- flow of steam in convergent and divergent nozzle; pressure
at throat for maximum discharge with different initial steam conditions such
as wet, saturated and superheated, effect of variation of back pressure;
supersaturated flow of steam in nozzles, Wilson line.
Rankine cycle with internal and external irreversibility; reheat factor;
reheating and regeneration, methods of governing; back pressure and pass
out turbines.
Steam power plants - combined cycle power generation; heat recovery
steam generators (HRSG) fired and unfired, cogeneration plants.
5. Refrigeration and air-conditioning:
Vapour compression refrigeration cycle - cycle on p-H & T-s diagrams; eco-
friendly refrigerants - R134a, 123; Systems like evaporators, condensers,
compressor, expansion devices. Simple vapour absorption systems.
Psychrometry - properties; processes; charts; sensible heating and cooling;
humidification and dehumidification effective temperature; air-conditioning
load calculation; simple duct design.

IFOS
IFS - Indian Forest Service Exam
UPSC conducts Indian Forest Services Exam for recruitment to forestry
services of India. From 2013, exam pattern has changed. A new component
of screening mechanism through civil services (preliminary) examination has
been added.
If you are applying for Indian Forests Service examination, then you
are required to appear in the civil services (preliminary) examination and
qualify the same for going to the second stage of Indian Forests Services
main examination (written and interview).
List of Optional Subjects in IFS exam
Two optional subjects have to be selected from the following subjects.
Total number of questions in the question papers of optional subjects will be
eight. All questions will carry equal marks. Each paper will be divided into
two parts, viz. Part A and Part B, each part containing four questions. Out of
eight questions, five questions are to be attempted. One question in each
part will be compulsory. Candidates will be required to answer three
more questions out of the remaining six questions, taking at least one
question from each part. In this way, at least two questions will be attempted
from each Part i.e. one compulsory question plus one more.

Paper - II
1. Thermodynamics:
Basic concept, Open and closed systems, Applications of Thermo-dynamic
Laws, Gas equations, Clapeyron equation, Availability, Irreversibility and T ds
relations.
2. I.C. Engines, Fuels And Combustion:
Spark Ignition and compression ignition engines, four stroke engine and two
stroke engines, mechanical, thermal and volumetric efficiency, Heat balance.
Combustion process in S.I. and C.I. engines, pre-ignition detonation in S.I.
engine Diesel knock in C.I. engine. Choice of engine fuels, Octane and
Cetane retings. Alternate fuels Carburration and Fuel injection, Engine
emissions and control, Solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, stoichometric air
requirements and excess air factor, fuel gas analysis, higher and lower
calorific values and their measurements.
3. Heat Transfer, Refrigeration And Air Conditioning:
One and two dimensional heat conduction. Heat transfer from extended
surfaces, heat transfer by forced and free convection. Heat exchangers,
Fundamentals for diffusive and connective mass transfer, Radiation laws,
heat exchange between black and non black surfaces, Network Analysis,
Heat pump refrigeration cycles and systems, Condensers, evaporators and
expansion devices and controls, Properties and choice of refrigerant,
Refrigeration Systems and components, psychometrics, comfort indices,
cooling loading calculations, solar refrigeration.
4. Turbo-Machines And Power Plants:
Continuity, momentum and Energy Equations. Adiabatic and Isentropic flow,
fanno lines, Raylegh lines, Theory and design of axial flow turbines and
compressors, Flow through turbo-machine balde, cascades, centrifugal
compressor. Dimensional analysis and modelling. Selection of site for steam,
hydro nuclear and stand-by power plants, Selection base and peak load
power plants, Modern High Pressure, High duty boilers, Draft and dust
removal equipment, Fuel and cooling water systems, heat balance, station
and plant heat rates, operation and maintenance of various power plants,
preventive maintenance, economics of power generation.
GATE
FLUID MECHANICS AND THERMAL SCIENCES
1. Fluid Mechanics:
Fluid properties; fluid statics, manometry, buoyancy, forces on submerged
bodies, stability of floating bodies; control-volume analysis of mass,
momentum and energy; fluid acceleration; differential equations of
continuity and momentum; Bernoulli’s equation; dimensional analysis;
viscous flow of incompressible fluids, boundary layer, elementary turbulent
flow, flow through pipes, head losses in pipes, bends and fittings.
2. Heat-Transfer:
Modes of heat transfer; one dimensional heat conduction, resistance concept
and electrical analogy, heat transfer through fins; unsteady heat conduction,
lumped parameter system, Heisler’s charts; thermal boundary layer,
dimensionless parameters in free and forced convective heat transfer, heat
transfer
correlations for flow over flat plates and through pipes, effect of turbulence;
heat exchanger performance, LMTD and NTU methods; radiative heat

4. Applications:
Power Engineering: Air and gas compressors; vapour and gas power cycles,
concepts of regeneration and reheat. I.C. Engines: Air-standard Otto, Diesel
and dual cycles. Refrigeration and air-conditioning: Vapour and gas
refrigeration and heat pump cycles; properties of moist air, psychrometric
chart, basic psychrometric processes. Turbomachinery: Impulse and reaction
principles, velocity diagrams, Pelton-wheel, Francis and Kaplan turbines.
