HW-3-
1-Asbestos insulation (k = 0.20 W/m K) is put on a steel pipe (1.6 cm ID, 2 cm OD). Hot water at 90°C
flows. through the pipe and the heat transfer coefficient (hi) is 500 W/m2 K Heat is lost from the outer
surface by natural convection to surrounding air at 30°C and the heat transfer coefficient (ho ) is 10 W/m2
K. Calculate the heat loss rate per metre length of the pipe for insulation thicknesses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5 cm. Plot the results and discuss the variation obtained.
Answ:
2- Calculate the critical radius of insulation for asbestos [k =0.17 W/m・ ◦C] surrounding a pipe (L=1m)
and exposed to room air at 20◦C with h=3.0 W/m2 ・ ◦C. Calculate the heat loss from a 200◦C, 5.0-cm-
diameter pipe when covered with the critical radius of insulation and without insulation. Answ(5.67 cm,
105.7 W/m, 84.8 W/m)
3- A 1.0-mm-diameter wire is maintained at a temperature of 400◦C and exposed to a convection
environment at 40◦C with h=120 W/m2 · ◦C. Calculate the thermal conductivity that will just cause an
insulation thickness of 0.2 mm to produce a “critical radius.” (Answ: K=0.084 w/m.K)
4. A refrigerant suction line having outer diameter 30 mm is required to be thermally insulated. The
outside air film coefficient of heat transfer is 12 W/m.k. The thermal conductivity of insulation is 0.3
W/m.k.
(i) Determine whether the insulation will be effective.
(ii) Estimate the maximum value of thermal conductivity of insulating material to reduce heat transfer.
(iii) Determine the thickness of cork insulation to reduce the heat transfer to 22 percent if the thermal
conductivity of cork is 0.038 W/m°C. ans(not effective., 0.18 W/m.k; 21 mm )
5- a plastic insulation (k = 0.18 Wlm°C) is to be applied to an electric cable of 8mm diameter. The
convective film coefficient on the surface of bare cable as well as insulated cable was estimated as 12 .5
W/m2.k and a surface temperature of 45°C was observed when the cable was directly
exposed to ambient air 20°C without insulation. Determine:
(i) The thickness of insulation to keep the wire as cool as possible;
(ii) The surface temperature of insulated cable if the intensity of current flowing through the conductor
remains unchanged.
Ans(10.4mm,35.8C)
