HW-1-
1- Consider a 0.8-m-high and 1.5-m-wide double-glass window consisting of two 4-mm-thick layers of glass
(k = 0.78 W/m · °C) separated by a 10-mm-wide stagnant air space (k = 0.026 W/m · °C). Determine the
steady rate of heat transfer through this double-pane window and the temperature of its inner surface for a
day during which the room is maintained at 20°C while the temperature of the outdoors is -10°C. Take the
convection heat transfer coefficients on the inner and outer surfaces of the window to be h1 = 10 W/m2 · °C
and h2 =40 W/m2 · °C,.
Ans(69.2 W, 14.2°C)
2- A 2 kW heater element of area 0.04 m2 is protected on the
backside with insulation 50 mm thick of k = 1.4 W/mK and on
the front side by a plate 10 mm thick with thermal conductivity
of 45 W/mK. The backside is exposed to air at 5°C with
convection coefficient of 10W/m2 K and the front is exposed
to air at 15°C with convection coefficient including radiation
of 250 W/m2K. Determine the heater element temperature and
the heat flow into the room under steady conditions.
Ans(1936.8 W, 63.2 W, 208.68°C, 163°C.)
3- Find the heat transfer per unit area through the
composite wall in Figure P2-4. Assume one-
dimensional heat flow. Ans(11400W)
4- In an oil-fired furnace, the combuslion products are at 1000C and the atmospheric air is at 25°C. The
convection heat transfer coefficient between the hot combustion products and the furnace wall is 10 W/m2 K
and the convection heat transfer coefficient between the furnace wall and the atmospheric air is 5 W/m2 K.
The furnace wall is to be made with fireclay block (k = 1.04 W/m K). Determine the maximum permissible
thickness of the fireclay block wall, if the wall temperature is not to exceed 800°C. Ans(19.5cm)
5- A furnace wall consists of three layers. The inner layer of 10 cm thickness is made of fire block (k = 1.04
W/m K). The intermediate layer of 25 cm thickness is made of normal block (k = 0.69 W/m K) followed by
a 5 cm thick concrete wall (k = 1.31 W/m K). When the furnace is in continuous operation, the inner surface
of the furnace is at 800°C while the outer concrete surface is at 50°C. Calculate (a) the rate of heat loss per
unit area of the wall (b) the temperature at the interface of the fire block and normal block and (c) the
temperature at the interface of the normal block and concrete wall. Take A=1m2. Anw(1515W, 654C,
