ORDER AND GROUP TEXT AND PARAGRAPHS
➢ Controlling the layout of document content on pages by inserting custom page breaks
➢ Creating document sections that display content differently than the main document
➢ Laying out the content of the document or section in columns.
Soft page break
➢ A break that occurs when the content exceeds the capacity of the page’s margins
➢ A break that moves if the preceding content changes; may be inconvenient
➢ Essentially a spillover
Manual page break
➢ A break that does not move if the preceding content changes
➢ Insert tab
Section break
➢ A break the splits your document’s content into sections that can have different formats
➢ Two purposes
o They can act as a “smart” page break and move the following content to the next
page, the next even page, or the next odd page.
o They can fence off a portion of document content that you want to format
differently.
➢ Different types
o Continuous starts the new section on the same page
o Next Page breaks the page before beginning the new section
o Even Page begins the new section at the top of the next even-numbered page
o Odd Page begins the new section at the top of the next odd-numbered page
NOTE: Word changes the location of the soft page breaks, but not the manual page breaks. In
section breaks, you can have pages with different orientations. Formatting marks make section
breaks visible.
Ctrl + Shift + 8 → Shows formatting marks
Why need formatting marks?
➢ So that you don’t accidentally move or delete pages or columns.
➢ So that you can easily locate the breaks if you want to delete them.
o To delete marks, double-click to highlight then del
o To delete breaks, click on the left margin
