QUESTION # 1
What is the significance of the title of the essay 'Work' by Ruskin?

ANSWER
“Work” is one of the most remarkable human traits. As the name suggests, “Work”
signifies that there are different categories of work depend upon its utility at large.
Moreover, the essay "Work" keeps elite working class aware about those disastrous
outcomes that could possibly be generated through Industrial Revolution. This
essay shows Ruskin’s rage against the excessive use of machines that ultimately
affects the poor labors at domestic level.

QUESTION # 2
To whom is this work addressed? Whom does he hold responsible for the
reform of society?

ANSWER
Ruskin delivers his lecture “Work” before the working men’s institute,
at Camber well. In this speech he addresses the working people there at
the institution of working men. This speech is a socio economic
criticism on the contemporary life of England.
Ruskin gives value to product by hand and he says, “The thing created
without toil is worthless” and “Machine ornaments are no ornaments
at all”. The industrialization of Europe creates class distinctions among
people. Here Ruskin- as a social reformer, talks about to eliminate this
class differences by the justice, modesty, faithfulness and honesty with
the work. More or less in his essay, the proponents of industrial
revolution are held responsible for the social reforms.
QUESTION # 3
Identify the characteristics of Ruskin's style in his essay 'Work' by giving
clues from the text (1 short quote from 'Work' for each feature of his style).

ANSWER
Apart from certain defects in Ruskin’s style of writing a prose, he stands at an
outstanding rank of the greatest master of English prose. He treats language as a
flexible instrument and he beautifully uses it for multipurpose such as; an
argument, a pictorial description, a eulogy (formal speech) invective, a persuasion
and a passionate appeal. Let’s take a bird’s eye view of his essay “Work” and try to
identify some characteristics of Ruskin’s style.

 Ruskin’s early prose is ornamented and gorgeous. This feature of his style
can be found out in this essay. He focuses more on content and pay less
attention to language.
 His essay “WORK” is a satire or irony on society. For example; he says in
the essay “Our next great English game, however, Hunting and
Shooting…… that Beautiful and special English game.”
 Ruskin’s uses long sentences in this essay.
 The “Work” is a didactic essay. It has moral lesson.
 He uses so many biblical allusions in the essay that make it difficult to
comprehend.
