5 Unique Coffee Brewing Methods

The document provides 5 methods for brewing coffee at home beyond using a coffee pot: 1) pour-over coffee using a Chemex, 2) espresso using an inexpensive home espresso machine, 3) Aeropress for quick, on-the-go brewing, 4) French press using a coarser grind and longer steep time, and 5) cold brew coffee using a coarse grind steeped 12-24 hours for a caffeinated drink that can be enjoyed in warmer weather. The methods vary in equipment needed, grind size, steeping time and resulting flavor profiles to allow coffee drinkers to explore new brewing techniques.

5 Ways to Brew Coffee

Taylor Weatherly

Do you know how to brew coffee other than in a pot? Listed below are five easy methods to
brew differently at home.

1. Pour-over

The pour-over is a great way to enjoy the flavor profile of coffee. The Chemex is the
recommended device to use for this brewing method. The slower you pour the water the more
flavor will be extracted from the grounds.

To brew, wet the filter to get rid of the cardboard taste. Then add the coffee and water in. The
water to coffee ratio depends on how strong you want it to be. According to [Link], “We
recommend starting with a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio when brewing with the Chemex. In other
words, for every 1 gram of coffee, add 15 grams of water.”

2. Espresso

If you are someone who likes to buy lattes from coffee shops, then this is the way to go.
Espresso machines can get expensive but Mr. Coffee offers one for $50 at Target. Going to a
coffee shop can add up quickly, but doing it at home can be an easy, fun alternative.

To pull a shot of espresso you have to grind your coffee very fine. Pack about 20 grams of
coffee into the group head then place it in the machine. Then, let the coffee get extracted into a
glass for about 20-25 seconds. The result will be a small, concentrated cup of espresso that can
be used for your preferred drink.

3. Aeropress

For those who are busybodies, the Aeropress is perfect for on-the-go coffee. The Aeropress
uses small paper filters. This will reduce the amount of oil and sediment that get into your cup.
The brew time is about 1-3 minutes which is a fast alternative to most methods.

Just like espresso, the Aeropress needs finely ground coffee. You put the coffee in the top of
the filter and pour water in. You can place the system directly on top of your cup of choice. After
a short steeping time, just push the top down to enjoy your cup of coffee.

4. French Press
The French Press is a standard method for manually brewing coffee. The grind needs to be
more coarse for this one. This means the coffee will need to steep longer to extract the flavor.

To start, put your coffee grinds into the bottom and fill with hot water. Let the mixture steep for
3-5 minutes. Then slowly push the filter from the top to bottom. The type of filter used will create
more residue in the bottom of your cup. However, you can adjust the grind to more coarse to
avoid this problem.

5. Cold Brew

This is the perfect drink to enjoy when the weather starts to warm up. Cold Brew has about
twice as much caffeine as a regular cup of drip coffee. It can also be done in any large container
so you only have to supply the coffee and water.

To brew, you need very coarse ground coffee. Add the coffee to the water and let it steep 12-24
hours. The ratio can be adjusted after some experimentation. According to Food52, “A good
place to start is to grind 3/4 cup beans for 4 cups of cold water—the size of a 32-ounce French
press.” This can be doubled or tripled depending on how much coffee you drink.

Go out of the box and brew your coffee differently tomorrow morning. You might be pleasantly
surprised by the change.
