Question: Below is an example of a well-written brochure. Analyze
it with the traits of Technical Writing and Seven C’s of
Communication. Identify the traits and explain how they are
present in the brochure.
Answer:
Seven C’s of communication:
1. Clarity: The trait of clarity is absolutely evident in the writing of
the brochure. Something that could be noticed immediately is the
use of familiar words, for easy understanding of the ideas among
the brochure. Secondly, it has an effective makeup of sentences,
conveying the knowledge accurately and clearly to the reader
through direct language and unity of sentences.
2. Conciseness: The brochure has concise language given the fact
that it does not consist of lengthy sentences or paragraphs. It
avoids the use of wordy phrases, rather sticks to conveying only
the relevant information regarding COVID’19, by disregarding
unnecessary repetition of words through the use of pronouns.
3. Completeness: The brochure fits the trait of completeness as it
consists of all the facts and detail regarding the disease and
answers the 5 W’s and 1H. It’s conveying knowledge about the
transmission, symptoms, how to avoid, what to do when infected,
the emergency numbers etc. So altogether, is it conveying all the
necessary information regarding the disease.
4. Consideration: Fitting the trait of consideration, the whole
brochure has been written with the ‘YOU’ view. As it conveying
important information for its readers, from “if you fall ill” to “how
you can protect yourself”. It is especially emphasizing on ‘you’ to
allow the readers better understand from their better perspective. It
doesn’t consist of any negative remark.
5. Courtesy: the brochure consists of courtesy. It can be
acknowledged by noticing that the brochure is written with the
viewpoint of readers and avoids discriminatory expressions.
6. Correctness: the brochure also fills in the trait of correctness by
providing the actual and accurate information and facts. Uses the
formal language as not to be discriminatory. Also does not contain
any grammatical errors.
7. Concreteness: the brochure is written in an active voice. It is
supporting all the factual information about the transmission,
avoidance etc.
Technical writing:
1. Accessible document design: The brochure fits the trait of
accessible design as it has used graphics, used a coordinating
color background scheme, and used images in places of bullets
making the brochure look appealing. The brochure has made
perfect use of white space by providing margins. It had used
different formatting styles e.g. highlighting and different levels of
heading format size.
2. Audience recognition: The brochure recognizes the need for it to
be a multi-cultural as it providing extremely important
information, which needs to be understood by each audience. It
fulfills the criteria as there’s no usage of figurative language. The
brochure remains gender neutral throughout.
3. Accuracy: the brochure fulfills the traits of grammar as-well. As
it does not contain any spelling or grammatical mistakes. It has
proper formatting, margins etc. The brochure is able of provide
sound and clearly understandable information.
