WEEK 3
Some students got to meet my helper's older brother, Chico, as he visited desks today. Chico watches the students for which students are well

behaved and tells me. I randomly choose one of these students to have Chico visit their desk for the whole class period. What an honor, ¡qué honor!

This week we kicked off with heading towards the goal of 90-95% of the class being in Spanish. We're at 50-75% Spanish. We also learned a new "Hola
1st Grade song."
2nd Grade See how much of the "Hola" song you remember! (to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star") Sing:
3rd Grade ¡Averigua cuánto español recuerdas de la canción de Hola! (a la canción "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star") Canta:
We also began grading this week based on participation, warm-up sheets, and exit tickets. The grades are on a 1-5 scale with the main focus being on
participation and completing tasks to the best of the students' abilities while remaining respectful to the classroom: to the teacher, to the classroom,
to each other, and to themselves. If students aren't too sure how to answer the question, they can whisper to tablemates for help.
In order to get a 5 out of 5 on the Warm up Sheets (hojas para calentarse), students must do the following:
Write the date in the gray box that says "Fecha"
Write your name at the top under "Nombre" and your teacher's name under "Clase"
Answer the warm-up to the best of your abilities (spelling does not affect the grade)
Chica filled out an example Warm up Sheet (the prompt was: Write down all the Spanish greetings you know). She went above and beyond and had a
bunch of answers AND filled out the optional bonus because she had extra time during the warm up.
Chica also filled out an example Exit Ticket (Tiquete de salida). To get a 5 out of 5 on the Exit Tickets, students must do the following:
Write your name at the bottom under "Nombre"
Write your teacher's name under "Clase"
Answer the prompt to the best of your abilities (spelling does not affect the grade)

¡Muchas gracias!

It was a shorter week, so we only spent one day learning and dedicating the other day to the guest speaker/having the second day off. We spent the
class solidifying our memory of the "Hola" song and "¿Cómo estás?" We began learning what to say in the afternoon.
Practice with your amigos and family! Ask people, "¿cómo estás?" and see if they respond, "bien," "asi-asi," or "mal!"

Some tables were rewarded for being the tables in the class that earned the most points. Tables don't earn points so much as begin with a certain
number of points in the form of clothespins that are taken away if the table is disruptive or breaking the Classroom Rules. I never replace clothespins
after they've been removed. The table that has the most table points at the end of the month gets a special reward. Most kids chose to color one
page from a coloring book as the reward.
I start counting points again with a new seating chart this month, and everybody starts fresh with a great chance to win!
We also learned a few more saludos (greetings), for the morning, afternoon, and at night.
Chica helped show some of the words with her daily routine. She's showing how to use "Buenas noches." ¡Gracias por la ayuda, Chica!

WEEK 7: HAPPY NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Happy final week of National Hispanic Heritage Month!
K-2 Spanish
We all got caught up with the new seating chart this week and counted the stars our classes have. Some classes are going to get a party day after the
Kindergarten
end of this first quarter!
1st Grade
We wrapped up "Buenos días," "Buenas tardes," and "Buenas noches" and celebrated the snow by watching a Spanish song about snow falling. We
2nd Grade learned new words we saw in the video, like snowflake, snowman, head, nose, hand, turn, and fall. Feel free to sing along with the song in Spanish

WEEK 8:
END OF 1ST QUARTER
We began the week either reviewing Buenos días," "Buenas tardes," and "Buenas noches" or watching a fun video about welcoming the fall with
different leaves falling on the ground and all the colors they come in.
I love what this Spanish teacher (SpanishTogether) has for other students to use for songs, so here's the song if you want to sing it with your kiddo:
"Hojas, hojas."
I also "interviewed" some of the students who checked out the Day of the Dead exhibit at the Global Village Museum over the weekend and felt
comfortable discussing it in class :)

WEEK 9
This week we learned about the Day of the Dead. We got packets, "Mi libro del Día de los Muertos" (My book of the Day of the Dead), and learned
K-2 Spanish
about the countries that celebrate Día de los Muertos, what they believe about the holiday, and what cultural artifacts they use in the celebration. We
Kindergarten loved learning about ofrendas, what goes on the ofrendas, and the sugar skulls! We also clarified that this holiday is different from Halloween.
1st Grade We also watched a video to get an idea of how the holiday is about remembering instead of scaring. We talked about how skeletons and skulls aren't
treated as spooky in these countries. The link to the video is here.

Chica here is showing her packet before she colored it in!

WEEK 10
Some kiddos didn't have Spanish this week, and some kiddos only had one day of class.
Since there wasn't a lot of time and since we were all pretty distracted with the upcoming Fall Break, we wrapped up Día de los Muertos with more
review, coloring the packet, and reading a book (The Spirit of Tío Fernando) .
We learned how people celebrate Día de los Muertos and for whom they celebrate it, and most importantly we learned that this isn't creepy or sad
but more of a celebration.

WEEK 11
This week we learned the days of the week. The vocabulary is...
lunes (Monday)
martes (Tuesday)
miércoles (Wednesday)
jueves (Thursday)
viernes (Friday)
sábado (Saturday)
domingo (Sunday)
siete (pronounced see-eh-teh) (seven)
Because there are so many words to learn, we'll be reviewing this for a while. We practiced the words as a class and worked on recognizing
vocabulary words during the song for the days of the week. We're going to work up to singing the song as it gets faster and we set that foundation.
Feel free to sing the song with your kiddo! Beware, the song gets really fast! The link is here.
Some of us also got to play a game translating the words from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Tables able to translate days of the week the
quickest won!
WEEK 12
We continued with the days of the week and introduced three new vocabulary words (yesterday, today, and tomorrow). The vocabulary is...
ayer (pronounced ai-yehr) (yesterday)
mañana (tomorrow)
hoy (pronounced "oy") (today)
We also got to play a class game with vocabulary. Students would hear "If today is Monday, tomorrow will be..." and raised a card with the correct day
of the week. The table that had the most correct, fastest won!
Feel free to practice with your kiddo! Here are a few examples in Spanish...

WEEK 13
Those of us who didn't finish the class vocabulary game began with it and then moved on to the months of the year.
We practiced and played a recognition game on day vs. week vs. month vs. year so we can make more sense of what "Days of the week" and "months
of the year" mean and keep the two apart.
the months of the year and then sang along with the song. The vocabulary is...
Día: Day
Semana: Week
Mes: Month
Año: Year
We're getting close to being able say the day's date ENTIRELY in Spanish! You can find the song at this link here.

WEEK 15
We learned 1-30 this week with songs and games.
The link for the 1-20 song is here, and the link for the 1-30 song/chant is here.
Some kids were familiar with 1-20 while others couldn't remember any of it, so we practiced a few times to get it down. We also had a review game of
"día, semana, mes, año" (I point to a day/week/month/year in a calendar of 2019, and the kids guess if it's a day, week, month, or year) to review what
we forgot.
Our flyswatter game involved students pointing at the number in Arabic numerals that corresponded with the Spanish word I said. We played it a few
times until we had it comfortably memorized.

WEEK 16
This week we moved onto parts of the body.
We practiced Cabeza hombros rodillas y pies (Head shoulders knees and toes) with a fun song, and you can find the link here.
Some of us also learned to dance the cumbia (a traditional dance across Latin America) using SpanishTogether's link here and moving our body parts
like our heads and feet.
Practice with your kiddo! Play Cabeza hombros rodillas y pies and maybe la cumbia, as well! The cumbia is incredibly easy to learn: just dance in a
three step and have fun!
We also worked on different worksheets labeling body parts and started to create our own muñecas de nieve (snowmen) with as many different body
parts (eyes, mouths, noses, and arms) as we wanted! We'll finish that up next week.

This week, some of us got a party day to celebrate getting at least five star days (or excellent days) for the second quarter!
We finished creating our muñecas de nieve, and some of us either read Spanish books or watched a silly episode of Simon's Cat celebrating
Christmas and different body parts for cat snowmen. The link to the video is here.
One class learned a little bit of "magic words," or polite words used in daily conversation. The vocab is...
Gracias: Thank you
De nada: You're welcome/it's nothing
Por favor: Please
Con permiso: Excuse me
Mucho gusto: Nice to meet you

I don't know about you and your kiddo, but two weeks feels like enough time to forget rules and procedures in class!
We used this week to review and remember all the procedures and expectations for Spanish class with a whiteboard game.
We also reviewed past vocabulary with all of the songs we've sung this past week. After the review, we are ready to move on and build with more
learning!

WEEK 2
This week we officially learned our basic colors! We'd been slowly learning a few for a while, but this week we sat down to learn it all together.
First, we did what I love to do: sang a song about the colors. The link to the song is here. Please sing along with your kiddo and do the same actions!
We played various games to practice our colors: Stand up if you're wearing __________, I Spy ("Veo, veo" in Spanish), and Guess which color. Feel free to
play I spy with your kiddo using these colors!
We also had a color-by-number practice for different balloons and winter fun for anybody who finished early.
WEEK 3
Today we finished our work on the colors by coloring balloons by color and reviewing which color was which today. Some of us only had one class this
week with Monday off, and some of us had a guest speaker on Friday. One class caught up with the snowman activity to hang up in the hall!
The guest speaker was in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica a few years ago and visited all day to talk about what living in Costa Rica and what the Peace
Corps are like!
This was also the first time some of us heard my announcement: I am returning to the Peace Corps in Panama this February, so I will have to leave all
my wonderful students :(
I'm extending my last day from the end of January to the Friday of the first week of February, so I'll make sure we learn a little more Spanish from me
before I go!

WEEK 4
This week we OFFICIALLY learned la ropa, the clothes!
We played two games: "Viste la rana" (dress the frog according to what clothes I mention) and "Juguemos en el bosque" (Let's play in the forest).
I learned about Juguemos en el bosque from my Panamanian host family, and it's kind of a combination of Mr. Fox and Sharks and Minnows: the kids
ask the "lobo" or wolf if he's in the forest, and the wolf replies that he's getting dressed with ______(insert clothing)____ until he is ready to tag people.
Like sharks and minnows, the kids who are tagged join the wolf until there's one person left. It's an incredibly fun game and a great way to teach
culture to your kiddo, so feel free to play it at home!
You can find how to sing the song here. The lyrics are:
Not-Lobo: "Juguemos en el bosque mientras el lobo no está. Juguemos en el bosque mientras el lobo no está. ¿Lobo está?" (Let's play in the forest
while the wolf isn't around. Is the wolf there?)
Lobo: "Me estoy poniendo...." (I'm putting on...")
Not-Lobo: "Juguemos en el bosque mientras el lobo no está. Juguemos en el bosque mientras el lobo no está. ¿Lobo está?" (Let's play in the forest
while the wolf isn't around. Is the wolf there?)
Lobo: "¡Salgo para comer a todos!" (I'm coming to eat everyone!)
*If you want an easier version, the Lobo can just identify the article of clothing or say "¡Sí!"
Some of us were ahead of schedule and got to learn next week's brief lesson about "me gusta" (I like) and "te gusta" (you like)!

WEEK 5
This week is my final week at New Vision Charter School before I pack up and return to the Peace Corps, and I'm already starting to miss everybody!
K-2 Spanish
Our Table Winners for the month of January were announced and rewarded with either coloring or stuffies this week, and we covered a very easy
Kindergarten
lesson today: "Me gusta" and "Te gusta."
1st Grade
The vocabulary is...
2nd Grade Me gusta _______: I like _______
I also finished with a lesson about the Peace Corps and where I'm going, Panama. I also wanted to say thank you to all you parents who read the
website and played the games/watched the videos on the website with your kiddos!
I'd like to leave you with one FINAL link. I just found this song from my favorite video resource that is wayyyy more useful for the "Juguemos en el
bosque" song! Please play this with your kids; they loved it! The link is here.
¡Adiós!
