Understanding Autopsy Types and Objectives

The document discusses autopsy, which is the systematic external and internal examination of a deceased body for medical, legal, or academic purposes. There are three main types of autopsies: medico-legal autopsies ordered by courts to determine cause of death in violent or suspicious cases; medical autopsies to determine cause of death from disease with family consent; and academic autopsies of unclaimed bodies donated to science. The objectives of autopsy are to identify the deceased, determine cause and manner of death, and establish time of death or whether a newborn was stillborn. Rules for autopsy include a written court order, performing during daylight with lighting, in a hospital and not at a crime scene, and identifying the deceased
