CHAPTER 1

The Problem

Introduction

Studying is very important. Reading books, articles, newspapers, magazines,

and other written materials inculcates new ideas and gives us a broader

knowledge about other things. This information can make our day-to-day tasks

easier and more convenient. Moreover, through sharing these facts to others

can enable us strengthen our communication skills and dealing with other people

that may help us in the future. 1But sometimes students find it hard to study. What

could be the reasons for this? There are a number of reasons why they get low

grades. Maybe their time in studying is not just enough or they really don’t

understand the lesson in that particular subject. Sometimes they have a problem

with their family and they get stress that’s why they couldn’t think better. This is

not just the possible cause of having low grade. Other reason is that they don’t

do their homework or seatwork that the teacher told to do so. If you know what

the reason why you get poor grades is, you can try to solve it. Your grades

sometimes reflects what can you do in your class, so if you get poor grades

maybe your learning skills is not enough or your just having difficulties in studying

because you can’t catch up.

But also, some students don’t like certain teachers or particular subjects and

they tend not to cooperate in the class. Having a poor class can be difficult to get

a good grade in the subject. But you can’t make it as an excuse the best thing to
2

do is to make the best of it in every quarter and try to get better grade in the next

quarter. Having an instinct of being the top one in the class can make a big

difference in the grades. It is also good to have a goal or dreams. Some students

often skip classes because they see that this is boring or they don’t want the

subject, but others attend class but do not pay attention in the teacher.

Personal issues can also affect grades. If you have been getting poor grades

and you see the reason for it, you can try to rectify the situation and get back on

the right track. Within the established system, the indicators that represent

knowledge and learning are grades. Grades are almost everything in school and

for a student. But there are many factors that affect the grades of a student in a

class: his/her abilities, his/her interest in the subject, his/her peers, the

classroom, even the schedule and many others. Some of these factors have

positive effects that result in higher grades, while others have negative ones,

resulting in lower grades.

Make most of the quarter, but then try to get a better grade next quarter.

Some students have difficult study environment at home. Perhaps there is too

much noise or perhaps it is not the place to do the required homework. In such a

situation, you may have to do much of your studying and homework at your

school or in the school library. Poor attitudes lead to low grades. Therefore, if a

student has poor attitude towards school and studying, it can surely result to poor

or even failing grades. Sometimes he/she can also have lack of motivation to do

well in school. One big reason for lack of motivation is that students have no

dreams of what they want to do, or can see no benefit from going to school. It is
3

good to have dreams, one of the biggest reason students fail is because they

didn’t study or have not done their homework. 2Getting a low grade is the effect of

the laziness of the students. They don’t comply or submit the homework and

projects they needed to submit. They don’t also do the teacher told to do so.

Sometimes they tend to sleep at the class because they are lack of sleep or they

don’t like the discussion. Also the gadgets have an effect on the grade of the

students because they use it when a teacher is discussing the lesson and they

just focus on their gadgets. Having an absence in just a day can affect the grade

of the student. The grade will be affected because they absent in the day where

the teacher could give a quizzes and exams.
