1 (a) A company has two plants, each of which produces and
supplies two products: A and B. The plants can each work
up to 16 hours a day. In plant 1, it takes three hours to
prepare and pack 1,000 gallons of A and one hour to
prepare and pack one quintal of B. In plant 2, it takes two
hours to prepare and pack 1,000 gallons of A and 1.5 hours
to prepare and pack a quintal of B. In plant 1, it costs Rs.
15,000 to prepare and pack 1,000 gallons of A and Rs.
28,000 to prepare and pack a quintal of B, where as in
plant 2 these costs are Rs 18,000 and Rs. 26,000,
respectively. The company is obliged to produce daily at
least 10 thousand gallons of A and 8 quintals of B.
Formulate this problem as an LP model to find out as to
how the company should organize its production so that
the required amounts of the two products be obtained at
the minimum cost.

Pre-stressed Concrete

3 A simply supported pre-stressed concrete beam
rectangular cross section 150 mm x 300mm, to support
a udl of 5 kN/m (including self weight) over a span of
6.0m. The tendon profile is straight with an eccentricity
of 50mm and carrying a pre-stressing force is 210 kN.
Determine the location of the thrust line in the beam at
central span section.
4 A simply supported pre-stressed post tensioned concrete
beam having a cross section at mid span as shown in fig.
1, is subjected to a total load with a udl of 9 kN/m over a
span of 24.0m. There are 6 cables each of 12 wires of
6mm diameter and are stressed with initial pre-stress of
1200 N/mm2. Assume that effective pre-stress of
1050N/mm2 after all loses has taken place, the tendon
profit is parabolic with zero eccentricity at the ends.
Compute the extreme fiber stresses in concrete.
5 A continuous pre-stress concrete beam with bonded
tendons as shown in fig 2. The c.g.s. line has an
eccentricity at A, is bent sharply at B and D, and has a
parabolic curve for the span BC. The cross section of
beam is same as shown in fig. 2 and is loaded with udl
of 20 kN/m is applied to the entire length of two spans.
Locate the line of pressure in the concrete due to the
combined action of pre-stress and external loads.
(Take P = 1200kN, I = 16.5x109 mm4 and Ac = 210x103
mm2)
6 A simply supported pre-stressed post tensioned concrete
beam having a cross section at mid span is a shown in
fig 3, is subjected to a loaded with a udl of 12 kN/m
over a span of 20.0m. The permissible stress in tendons
at initial pre-stress is 1200 N/mm 2 and at final prestress,
after all loses has taken place, is 1050 N/mm 2. The
permissible stress in concrete under compression is 8.0
N/mm2 and in tension is 2.0 N/mm2. Design the pre-
stressing tendon with its location near the mid span.
7 A pre-stressed concrete beam 250 mm wide and 600 mm
deep is subjected to an axial pre-stressing force of 1500
kN. Design the end block.
