ROCK MECHANICS FOR DEEP SUBSURFACE GEO-ENERGY
APPLICATIONS
Dr. Bogdan Orlić is a senior scientist at TNO – Organisation for Applied
Scientific Research, Energy Division, in the Netherlands. He holds a Ph.D. in
Technical Geoscience from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.
He worked as a teaching assistant and hydrogeological consultant at the
Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad (1984-1990), a teaching assistant and
geotechnical consultant at the Faculty of Mining and Geology in Belgrade
(1990-1992), a Ph.D. researcher at Delft University of Technology (1992-1997)
and a senior geoscience consultant at Lynx Geosystems Inc. in Germany and
Canada (1997-1998). Since 1998 he has been with TNO where he has held
different research and technical positions. Dr Orlić is a leading expert in
petroleum-related and sustainable geoenergy-related geomechanics. He
specialised in numerical modelling of geological hazards and risks related to
the use of deep subsurface for different geo-energy applications. He published
more than 70 publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings and
authored and co-authored many technical reports. He is a reviewer for several
leading scientific journals in the fields of geomechanical and geotechnical
engineering, rock mechanics and greenhouse gas control.
1300 - 1345 Dr. HARIS SAROGLOU, Teaching & Research Fellow in the School of Civil
Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece
ROCK SLOPE INSTABILITY AND HAZARDS INDUCED BY ROCKFALLS
Dr. Haris Saroglou is a Senior Teaching & Research Associate in the School of
Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens. He holds an M.Sc.
in Engineering Geology from Imperial College, an M.Sc. in Tunneling and a
Ph.D. from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He was a
Lecturer in Engineering Geology/ Rock Mechanics in the Department of Civil
& Environmental Engineering in Imperial College, London (2013- 2016). He
has received an Honor from the Academy of Athens (2009) for his research and
the Richard Wolters Prize by the International Association of Engineering
Geology and the Environment (IAEG) in 2012. He was Visiting Fellow in the
Institute of Geology & Geophysics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
under the 2016 President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI). He has
authored 60 publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals and international
Conferences and his research has a strong scientific impact. He is an Editorial
Board Member in the Bulletin of Engineering Geology of IAEG since 2012.
He has extensive experience in consulting in Civil Engineering projects
(highways, tunnels, slope stability, dams) in Greece and abroad. His research
interests are the engineering behavior of rocks and rockmasses, weak rocks and
complex formations, the engineering geology of major infrastructure works,
geological hazard evaluation and risk (landslides and rockfalls) as well as
protection of cultural heritage sites.

Thessaloniki, Geological Department, Faculty of Sciences, Greece
THE ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF FLYSCH ROCK
MASSES IN TUNNELLING
Dr. Vassilis Marinos is an Assistant Professor of Engineering Geology at
School of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
and the President of the IAEG National Group of Greece. He holds a Doctoral
Degree from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), School of
Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Division and an MSc with Distinction from
Imperial College. His area of expertise includes tunneling, landslide risk
assessment, geotechnical classification, engineering-geological assessment of
weak and complex rock masses and geotechnical databases. He has published
65 papers in international journals and international conferences. His work has
been cited 252 times according to Scopus citation database. His professional
experience includes consulting services in Geohazards-Landslides risk
assessment and microtunnel feasibility assessment along TAP pipeline, on
engineering-geological topics for major engineering projects, on tunnel design
for Engnatia Highway, S.A., on engineering-geological, geotechnical and
hydrogeological issues in the extension lines of Athens Metro and the main line
of Thessaloniki Metro. His research work has been included in the design
specifications of Athens Metro S.A.
