In the age of globalisation, access to the Internet and the media provides instant
contact with many cultures. Young people’s cultural identity may be influenced
by certain aspects of other cultures.
Discuss the statement. What do you think young Vietnamese people should to to
maintain our cultural identity to today’s society? Give reasons and specific
examples to support your opinion(s). Write at least 350 words.
In these years of internationalization, people can get access to the Internet as well as
media easier than ever, enabling us to get contact with other cultures in a matter of
seconds. This eventually helps young people approach new cultures, which can affect
their cultural identity in some way. Therefore, it’s time we thought over the question:
“What can be done to prevent the young in Vietnam from ending up losing their
traditional customs?”
To start with, it would be better to figure out how other cultures impact young
people’s cultural identity. In fact, thanks to the availability of Internet and mass
media, many teenagers can receive trends from many countries such as Korea, Japan,
China, US, UK, ect. It’s no doubt that our lifestyles, fashions, foods, music,
achitectures and even festivals are more or less affected by those from far away. For
example, popular foods like pizza, spaghetti, hamburger, or famous festivals such as
Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, are all originated in Western countries, but have
been imported to Vietnam through one way or another and are now very much
appreciated by many since they enhance our physical and mental life effectively.
At the same time, if the young generation approach new cultures, they may eventually
forget their own culture, which they might consider out-dated, boring and
meaningless. Beside, it’s unquestionable that our culture really has many honorable
ways of asociating, which should definitely be kept in order to improve people
manners but are misunderstandingly thought of as a pressure, hindering freedom of
expression. This can be a serious effect caused by the import of individualism from
the West, which can negatively impact our society of collectivism. Not to mention the
fact that parts of our tradition are pretty much ignored by many young people, who
struggle to perform rituals for Tet holiday or their ancestors’ death anniversary and are
consequencely unable to understand the importance of our spiritual and moral
conception. If the situation goes on, we will someday lose our cultural identity and
Vietnamese will then have nothing to take pride in. To prevent this from happening,
teenagers should spend more time learning about the national past from their elders
and then try to conserve and promote their homeland’s traditions. Furthermore, they
should try to encourage their acquaintances to do those mentioned-above things.
In conclusion, since access to the Internet and other modern means of communication
cab enable other cultures to influence ours in some aspects, young people should try
their best maintaing Vietnamese’s cultural identity and spread it from generation to
generation. Only by doing so can our tradition be kept for eternity.
