Compound Refrigeration Cycle Calculations

This document contains 6 questions about compound refrigeration cycles that use multiple evaporators, compressors, condensers, and other components. It provides details on the refrigerants, temperatures, pressures, and capacities involved in each hypothetical system. Students are asked to use this information to calculate values like the power required for each compressor, the system coefficient of performance (COP), and the heat rejected or transferred by various components.

Compound Refrigeration Cycles

Q1/ A refrigeration machine of R-12 with one compressor and two evaporators with
individual expansion valves and back pressure valve. The high temperature
evaporator has 80 T.R and 5 oC. The low temperature evaporator has 25 T.R and
-25 oC. The condensing temperature is 45 oC. Calculate, (i) The power required
for the compressor, (ii) The C.O.P, and (iii) The water mass flow rate required to
cooling the condenser allowing that the raise of its temperature is 8 oC.

Q2/ Two evaporators system uses R-707. The low temperature evaporator has a
capacity of 10 T.R and operates at 245 K. The high temperature evaporator has

a capacity of 25 T.R and operates at 275 K. The condenser temperature is 320

K. The compression in two compressors is isentropic. Find the power required
to derive the compressor and the system C.O.P.

Q3/ A vapor compression system uses R-134a and cooling load of 25 T.R. The
pressure of the evaporator is 1.5 bar and condenser is 15 bar. The system is two
stages with flash intercooler at 4 bar. Determine; (a) The required power for
each compressor, and (b) The C.O.P.

Q4/ The system shown uses R-12, evaporator pressure 1.2 bar, condenser pressure 9
bar, liquid sub-cooler pressure 3 bar, vapor leaves evaporator and sub-cooler

dry and saturated. Liquid comes out the condenser saturated and sub-cooled to
20 oC in the liquid sub-cooler. Find the C.O.P. of the system.

Q5/ An ammonia refrigeration machine of 25 T.R with two stages of compression

and water intercooler. The condenser pressure 16 bar, evaporator pressure 1.2
bar and intercooler pressure is 5 bar. The pressure drop through compressor
valves are, low pressure suction 0.2 bar, low pressure delivery 0.4 bar, high
pressure suction 0.3 bar, and high pressure delivery is 0.7 bar. Ammonia
liquid comes out the condenser at 27 oC. Ammonia is cooled to 27 oC in water
intercooler. Suction temperature is -13 oC. Calculate, (a) Power required for
each compressor, (b) Heat rejected for both water intercooler and condenser,
and (c) The machine C.O.P.

Q6/ A refrigeration system shown below uses R-707. The refrigerant comes out
evaporators, and flash intercooler dry and saturated. Draw the cycle process on
pressure-enthalpy diagram and find, (i) The power of each compressor, and (ii)
C.O.P
