The articles “What Is Depression”, “How to Deal with Depression”, and “Helping
Someone with Depression” mainly discuss the killing disease which is depression. The
authors stated the symptoms of depression, risk factors of depression and how depression
should be treated. All the points in the three articles are well written and can deliver ideas to
the reader efficiently. The ideas in the articles mostly are based on actual research rather
than just bias or speculation.

First and foremost, the article describes what is depression. Based on Parekh (2017),
define depression as a common and serious medical disease that negatively affects how a
person feels, the way he thinks and how he acts. Depression also makes a person felt
excessive sadness, low motivation, and loss of interest in enjoyable things. There are a few
signs of depression. This Way Up Org (2020), stated that there are two types of depression
signs which are physical symptoms and psychological symptoms. For example, physical
symptoms are loss of appetite, interest in sex and sleep. Psychological symptoms of
depression are feeling miserable, suicidal thoughts, and inefficient thinking.

Moreover, the articles also stated the risk factors of depression. There are a few
factors that can play a role in depression. One of them is biochemistry which is some
chemical problems in the brain. Secondly, the genetics factor is important in many cases of
depression. Besides, the personality which is people with low self-esteem and easily
overwhelmed by stress are more likely to encounter depression. Furthermore, the
environmental factors which are violence, abuse, and parent's negligation. Last but not least,
the factors that should not be overlooked is physical illness or intake of certain medications.
There are a few methods that can be used to treat depression. One of them is by
using medication. The medication that is usually being used is antidepressants which can
produce improvements within the first week or two. In addition, psychotherapy session is
most likely helpful to depression patients. Psychotherapy sessions can help the patient to
recognize distorted thinking and make them change behavior and thinking. Besides,
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is also one of the most effective ways to treat depression.
In addition, we also can help someone with depression. For example, we encourage the
person with depression to get help from professionals and supporting their treatments.

I will now evaluate the three articles. The first article, “What Is Depression” written by
Parekh (2017). The author describe depression with a lot of explanation and idea. For
example in the first paragraph, the author excellently explains depression. “Depression
(major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects
how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression
causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to
a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function
at work and at home.” Parekh (2017). Moreover, I am certain that this article is purely fact
because the author of the article is a physician and there are a few references listed on the
bottom of the article.

Secondly, the article “How to Deal with Depression and Sadness” written by This Way
Up Org. This article, This Way Up Org (2020), suggested people who are sad or depress to
set goals for daily activity. I agree with the author suggestion. This is because when we are
doing nothing or just doing only one or two activities in a day we tend to feel stress. It will
also make us overthinking everything. Also, when we set daily goals, we will have a sense of
purpose every day. We also will feel satisfied if we can achieve all the goals.

Furthermore, the third article “Helping Someone with Depression” written by Melinda
Smith, mainly focused on how we as a community help others who have depression. There
are a lot of ways that was provided by authors. The solution that attracts me the most is we
should understand depression in a friend or family member. Smith (2019), highlighted that
depression is a serious condition and we should never underestimate the seriousness of
depression because it drains a person’s energy, optimism, and motivation. I personally think
that our community should change for a greater good. Based on my experience, our
community always assumed that depression is not a serious thing and people with
depression are just overreacting. Instead of that, we should try to understand others who are
sad because they might have depression.
In a nutshell, depression is a serious health issue that needs an effective solution to
prevent it. This is because depression prevents a person to think positively and have an
interest in anything. This will prevent our community and country to function properly today
and worsen in the future. Moreover, if everyone does not take it as a serious issue, many
people will suffer from the problem and it may lead to suicide and suicide attempts. So we
should help each other especially people who are depressed and sand and people with
symptoms of depression. We need to realize and take a further step to create more
awareness about this health issue so that everyone can play a part in solving the problem.
