Stripping With Direct Steam Injection

Direct steam injection stripping has the following key features: 1. Steam is injected as small bubbles into the liquid in the tower bottom, removing the need for a reboiler exchanger. 2. The feed to the tower is normally saturated liquid. 3. It is used when distilling an aqueous solution of a more volatile component and water. 4. The advantage is simpler construction since it uses a sparger instead of a heater.

STRIPPING WITH DIRECT STEAM INJECTION

 The steam is injected as small bubbles into the liquid in the tower bottom.
 The reboiler exchanger is not needed.
 The feed to the tower is normally saturated liquid
 Used when an aqueous solution of more volatile component and water is being distilled
 The advantage of open steam lies in simpler construction of heater, which is a sparger.

TMB: F + S = D + B
D, XD
CMB: FXF = DXD + B XB
F, XF

For Stripping Line Equation:

TMB : Lm + S = Vm+1 + B

CMB: Lm Xm + S(0) = Vm+1ym+1 + BXB

Steam, SS

REARRANGING: B, XB
Lm BX b
ym+1 = Xm−
V m+1 V m+ 1
For Saturated Steam Entering:

S = Vm+1 =D ; Lm = B =F

B B XB
Therefore: ym+1 = Xm− (Xm, ym+1)
S S
When y=0; X = XB

(XB, 0) xF

saturated liquid feed,
