Easter Celebration: Christ's Resurrection

The sermon focuses on how Easter is about life - both life after sin and life after death. It discusses how through His resurrection, Christ conquered sin and death. It notes that because we have died with Christ in baptism, we have also been raised with Him to new life. The resurrection means that those who believe in Christ will not perish but have eternal life.

The Resurrection of our Lord — April 12, 2020

The Victory of Christ Crucified Is Given to You

in the Preaching of His Resurrection
As We Gather
Every Sunday is the Lord’s day, the day of His resurrection, “after the Sabbath,
toward the dawn of the first day of the week” (Matthew 28:1). In the Divine Service, the
Church enters upon the eternal “eighth day.” The Lord Jesus, “who was crucified,” who
“has risen, as he said” (Matthew 28:5–6), is the firstborn from the dead and the
firstfruits of the new creation. Because “you have died” with Him in Holy Baptism, “you
have been raised with Christ” and “your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians
3:1, 3). The Lord Jesus has become our God, as surely as He is “the God of all the clans
of Israel,” and we now belong to His people (Jeremiah 31:1). In this, He “shows no
partiality” (Acts 10:34), but “everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins
through his name” (Acts 10:43). As “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power” and “raised him on the third day,” He also raises us up and pours
out His Spirit upon us through the Gospel (Acts 10:38, 40).

Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen

Confession/Absolution
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our
sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination. (You may pray
silently the following prayer:)
Almighty, everlasting God, for our many sins we justly deserve eternal
condemnation. In Your mercy You sent Your dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who
won for us forgiveness of sins and everlasting salvation. Grant us a true
confession that, dead to sin, we may be raised up by Your life-giving absolution.
Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may be ever watchful and live true and godly
lives in Your service; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.
We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly
deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son,
Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that
we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy
name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His
sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of
Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the
name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Introit ................................................................................ Exodus 15:2a, 6, 13, 17–18; antiphon: v. 1b
P I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
C the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.
P The LORD is my strength and my song,
C and he has become my salvation.
Page 3
P Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power,
C your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.
P You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have
redeemed;
C you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
P You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain,
C the place, O LORD, which you have made for your abode,
P the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
C The LORD will reign forever and ever.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
C the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.
Collect of the Day
P Let us pray.
O God, for our redemption You gave Your only-begotten Son to
the death of the cross and by His glorious resurrection delivered us
from the power of the enemy. Grant that all our sin may be drowned
through daily repentance and that day by day we may arise to live
before You in righteousness and purity forever; through Jesus Christ,
our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C Amen
Old Testament Reading .......................................................................................Jeremiah 31:1–6
P The Old Testament Reading for the Resurrection of our Lord is from
Jeremiah, chapter 31.
1
“At that time, declares the LORD, I will be the God of all the clans
of Israel, and they shall be my people.”

Page 4
2
Thus says the LORD:
“The people who survived the sword
found grace in the wilderness;
when Israel sought for rest,
3
the LORD appeared to him from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
4
Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
O virgin Israel!
Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.
5
Again you shall plant vineyards
on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
and shall enjoy the fruit.
6
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
in the hill country of Ephraim:
‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
to the LORD our God.’”
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gradual ............................................................. adapt. from Matthew 28:7; Hebrews 2:7; Psalm 8:6
P Christ has risen from the dead.
C [God the Father] has crowned him with glory and honor.
P He has given him dominion over the works of his hands;
C he has put all things under his feet.

Page 5
Epistle............................................................................................................................ Colossians 3:1–4
P The Epistle is from Colossians, chapter 3.
1
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds
on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3For you have
died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your
life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel .............................................................................................................. Matthew 28:1–10
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
1
Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And behold,
there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from
heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance
was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4And for fear of him the
guards trembled and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the
women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was
crucified. 6He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place
where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from
the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see
him. See, I have told you.” 8So they departed quickly from the tomb with
fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9And behold, Jesus met
them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet
and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and
tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon .................. “Easter Is about Life — Life after Sin and Life after Death!” — Mark 16:1–7

Page 7
Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church
P Rejoicing in the resurrection of our Lord and sharing in His peace, let us
pray to the Lord on behalf of ourselves and all people as they have need.
Brief silence
O risen Savior, set free our tongues to confess Your resurrection
before a world still captive to sin and death. Give us courage to go to
every place and to speak in every language the salvation won for us
upon the cross and the hope granted to us of life that death cannot
overcome. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P O risen Savior, make us to burn with the fire of Your love, that we may
love You above all things and love our neighbors as ourselves. Be with
those who celebrate special days this week: Richard Grosshauser (13),
Austin Richter (14), Jim and Deb Benner (16), Amber Ebel (16), Benson
Ebel (16), and Janice Van Beek (18). Continue to bless them as they
mark these special days. Deliver us all from fear and relieve the
anxiety of our hearts, that we may live out fully the hope planted
within us and the new lives we received in the waters of our Baptism.
Sustain us in this faith until we are able to safely again meet together
and worship You as one body in Christ. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P O risen Savior, anoint the words of those who preach to us Your
Gospel, and open our ears to hear with faith all that He has done to
save us. Raise up many who will serve You in the various callings of
Your Church and who will serve us in Your name with Your Word and
gifts. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

Page 9
P O risen Savior, hear us on behalf of Donald, our president; Kim, our
governor; the Congress of the United States; and all state and local
elected officials. Guide them according to Your Word, that their labors
for our nation’s health and welfare may not be in vain, nor forgetful of
the vulnerable, aging and unemployed. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P O risen Savior, hear us on behalf of those who cry to You in any need,
especially the sick, the suffering, the disabled, the wounded in spirit, those
who suffer mental illness and those in their last days on earth . Give them
grace according to their need, and sustain them in their afflictions to the
day when their sufferings will be exchanged with glory in the life to come.
Bless our leaders, medical personnel, first responders and all who work
under Your hand to bring us safely out of this pandemic. Help us
especially today to see that our Lord's resurrection conquers our sin and
all of it's consequences. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P All praise to You, dear Father in heaven, for You have opened up to us
the way to eternal life in the resurrection of Your Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ. We give You thanks for all those who have gone before us in
the faith and now rest from their labors. Keep us in that same faith,
and embolden us by Your resurrection to be fearless in the face of
disease, chaos, loneliness and every sorrow of this world. Give us, with
Job, the solemn expectation to cheer us: our Redeemer lives, and we,
too, shall be resurrected and glorified to live with Him in His eternal
Kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our resurrected
Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and forever.
C Amen.

Page 10
Lord’s Prayer
P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
Benediction
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
C Amen.
