Week 4 - Tutorial 3

This document contains a tutorial solution that discusses: 1. The key activities in the planning phase of a project including defining the problem, producing a schedule, confirming feasibility, staffing, and launching. 2. The difference between tangible and intangible costs and benefits - tangible can be measured in dollars while intangible cannot. 3. The difference between a PERT chart and Gantt chart - a PERT chart schedules based on tasks/activities while a Gantt chart uses a bar chart to represent the project schedule.

IS323 Tutorial 3 Solution

Task 1 – Review Question.

1. The activities of Planning phase project are:
 Define the problem
Is one of the important part of doing a project. It is precisely to solve the problem
and determine the scope of a new system.
 Produce the project schedule
The three important terms to define are activity, task and phase. In order to develop
a project schedule, the activities are divided into major activities that is develop a
work breakdown structure, build a schedule using a Gantt chart and develop a
resource requirement and staffing plan.
 Confirm project feasibility
Determine whether a development project can reasonably succeed and think about
possible risks that may cause the project to fail. We assess the original assumptions
and identify other risks that could jeopardize the project success
 Staff the project
Based on the tasks identified in the project schedule, the project manager develops a
detailed resource plan.
 Launch the project.
First, the oversight committee is finalized, and the members meet to give the final
go-ahead for the project, including releasing the necessary funds. Second, a formal
announcement is made through the organization’s standard communication
channels that gives credence to the project and solicits cooperation from all
involved parties.

2. Tangible cost are the ones that needs to be paid for. For example, office equipment,
employees’ salaries and training whereas Intangible cost are the cost that are difficult to
qualify. For example, the customer satisfaction.
Tangible benefit can be measured or estimated in dollars whereas intangible benefits
cannot be measured or estimated in dollars.

3. PERT Chart is a technique for scheduling a project based on individual tasks or activities
whereas Gantt chart is a bar chart that represents the task and activities of the project
schedule.

Critical path:

1. 0-1-3-4-7-8
2. 0-2-3-5-6-7-8

Therefore we add the duration in days;

1. 0+2+3+2+3+3 = 13 days
2. 0+1+3+4+2+3+3 = 16 days.

To conclude, the critical path is 0-2-3-5-6-7-8 because it has the highest

duration in days.
