THE MONROE DOCTRINE: Later became the Caracas Declaration. Prevent European
countries from further colonizing the Americas. Mainly intended to avoid situations
that could make the New World a battleground for the Old World powers so that the
U.S. could exert its influence undisturbed.
THE CARROT AND STICK APPROACH - a metaphor for the use of a combination of
reward and punishment to get a desired behavior. It is based on the idea that
a cart driver might activate a reluctant horse by dangling a carrot in front of it
and smacking it on the rear with a stick.
THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
The USA bought the Danish (Denmark) islands of St. Thomas, St Croix and St.
John in 1917 for $25 million – These became the US Virgin Islands.
The USA had been ceded Puerto Rico and Cuba as a result of the Spanish
American War

The Bay of Pigs was the failed landing operation in April 1961 on the
southwestern coast of Cuba by Cuban Exiles (sponsored by CIA) opposed to Fidel
Castro’s Cuban Revolution. The aborted invasion of the island, covertly financed
and directed by the US Government greatly impacted the relations between
Cuba, the United States, the Soviet Union near the height of the Cold War.
