Rational Function

1. Rational functions are functions of the form f(x)=p(x)/q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials and q(x) is not equal to 0. Rational functions can model real-life situations and their graphs may have vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptotes, x-intercepts and y-intercepts. 2. To solve rational equations, the least common denominator is found to eliminate fractions. Solutions are then checked in the original equation. Rational inequalities are rewritten with the fraction on one side and 0 on the other, then critical values are found and intervals are determined to satisfy the inequality. 3. Solving rational functions and equations allows

REPRESENTS REAL-LIFE SITUATION USING RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

Rational functions - rational functions may contain a variable in the
denominator.
- is a function of the form where g(x) and h(x) are polynomials and h(x) cannot be
zero.

Examples:
1. An object is to travel a distance of 10 meters. Express speed s as a function s(t) of travel
time t, in seconds. Show s(t) for various values of t and graph.

students in STEM track. The amount is to be allotted equally among all the students in the
STEM track. Let’s help the principal to determine an equation representing the relationship
of the allotted amount per student ( y-variable) versus the total number of students.

SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATION

Rational Equation – an equation involving rational expression

Steps in Solving Rational Equation

 Find the LCD ( least common denominator) of all the fractions in the equation.
 Multiplying each side of the equation by the common denominator to eliminate the
fraction.
 Check the solution to the original equation.
SOLVING RATIONAL INEQUALITIES

Rational Inequalities – An inequality involving rational expressions.

Steps in solving rational inequalities:
1. Rewrite the inequality as a single fraction on one side of the inequality
symbol and zero (0) on the other side.
2. Find the critical values for both numerator and denominator. These values
will make the numerator and denominator equal to zero.
3. Determine the intervals or regions on the number line determined by
these critical values.
4. Choose a test number in each interval or region.
5. Inspect the signs of the number and denominator in these test numbers.
6. Choose the interval region that satisfies the inequality.

denominator zero.
If 0 is not in the domain, then there is no y- intercept. If 0 is in the
y- intercept
domain, the y – intercept is the value of the function at x = 0.
x- intercept Put the value of the function at zero, that is y= 0.
Find the values of x where the denominator of the reduced rational

function is zero.
Horizontal asymptote Horizontal asymptotes of a rational function.
 If n<m , the horizontal asymptote is y = 0.
 If n = m , the horizontal asymptote is y = a/b , where a is
the leading coefficient of the numerator and b is the leading
coefficient of the denominator.
 If n > m, there is no horizontal asymptote.
