Crisis: A time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger.

Vocabulary Words

1. Assault: (Verb) A violent physical or verbal attack.


During the argument, the wife assaulted her husband with a wooden chair.
2. Mug: (Verb) To attack and rob someone in a public place.
Last night on my way back from the bus station, I was jumped and mugged by a group of kids. They stole my
backpack including my brand-new phone. Luckily, they didn’t steal my wallet.
3. Vandalize: Deliberately destroy or damage public or private property.
Some idiots vandalized my brand-new car. They wrote Kayserispor on the back of my car.
Some consider graffiti as artwork while others consider it vandalism.
4. Testify: To give evidence as a witness.
Watching my brother testify about the violence he endured as prisoner-of-war was so depressing and sad.
5. Testimony: Evidence in support of a fact or assertion; proof.
Her testimony was crucial to proving that Mehmet didn’t steal the teacher’s car.
6. Suspect: A person thought to be guilty of a crime or offense.
All the suspects were brought to jail for the victim to identify from a lineup.
7. Accuse: (Verb) To charge someone with an offense or crime.
After she discovered a separate bank account, she accused her husband of lying to her.
I am innocent. I did not commit the crime. In fact, her entire testimony is an absolute false accusation.
8. Negotiations: Discussion aimed at reaching an agreement.
A worldwide ban on whaling is currently under negotiation. Negotiations between unions and employers…
9. Ransom: The holding or freeing of a prisoner in return for a payment.
The family is willing to pay ransom for his release.
10. Kidnap: (Verb) To steal a person. Take someone away illegally by force, typically to obtain a ransom.
Last year, criminals kidnapped my father for 3 days and released him after we paid 10,000 TL.
11. Hostage: A person kidnapped or held as security for the fulfillment of a condition
The kidnapper instructed the hostage's family to drop the ransom at noon in a hidden trash bag.
12. Jeopardy: Danger of loss, harm, or failure.
Serdar was caught cheating and now his plans of graduating on time are in jeopardy.
The doctor told Gonca that eating unhealthy foods in addition to smoking was jeopardizing her health.
13. Settlement: An official agreement intended to resolve a dispute or conflict.
After I broke my neighbor’s window, we reached a settlement whereby I would replace her window and she
wouldn’t report me to the police.
14. Paramedics: A person who is trained to do medical work, especially emergency first aid.
Paramedics are typically the first people to arrive at the crime scene.
15. Fatalities: Death by accident, in war, or from disease.
Although it was a powerful earthquake, fortunately there were no fatalities.
16. Wounded: (Verb) To injury.
You really wounded his pride when you turned him down.
Many workers were wounded when the gas tank exploded.
17. Rescued: (Verb) To save from danger.
The firefighters rescued my cat from a burning building.
18. Hero: a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
Seçil became an instant hero when she saved a child from getting hit by a bus.
19. Courageous: (Adjective) Not deterred by danger or pain; brave.
I’m so proud of my daughter. She courageously ran into the burning building to rescue an elderly woman.
20. Careless: (Adjective) Showing or caused by a lack of attention.
Our house was robbed because my housemate was so careless that she didn’t close the window.
21. Pirates: A person who attacks and robs ships at sea.
Pirates surrounded the ship before boarding it and then demanding a huge ransom for its release.
22. Criminals: A person who has committed a crime.
The police wrongfully accused me of being a criminal, because I spoke out against the mayor.
23. Negotiator: Person who negotiates.
After 20 hours of negotiations, the negotiator failed to win the release of the hostages.
24. Painstaking: (Adjective) Taking pain; involving great care and effort.
Our business meeting lasted 10 hours because of painstaking readings that had to be analyzed and then signed.

Over the weekend, things really got me down. I have so much work to do now that Bruce has left.

I am finding it hard to get on top of things. I tried to get down to business on Friday and sort

things out, but there was just so much work. I need to talk this over with my boss. I expect that she

will just tell me to face up to it and get on with it!

I miss Bruce; I really looked up to him and now I feel as though I have a lot to live up to. I should

just go along with things for now and not worry so much. However, if I don't manage things, a lot

of people will criticize and possibly really put me down. It's hard.
