Educator's Guide: Max's Reading Progress

This document summarizes a student's progress in oral reading fluency. It reports that the student, Max, began at 46 correct words per minute with 10 errors and ended at 75 correct words per minute with 5 errors over 10 weeks of monitoring. His progress ranged from 37 to 82 correct words per minute. Based on his upward progress and approaching his adjusted goal of 85 words, the instructor determined no instructional changes were needed. A new end of year goal of 100 words per minute with no more than 2 errors was set.

READING CBM PROGRESS MONITORING, Part 3

Assignment Format: CBM Assignment, Part 3
CBM Assignment, Part 3
Rachel Ellis
December 7, 2019
Student Name: Max
Student School: Hogwarts
Student Grade Level: 8th
Skill you are monitoring: Oral Reading Fluency
Skill level for progress monitoring: 2nd
Name of assessment used: Aimsweb

Student goal (established in CBM Part 1, possibly adjusted in CBM Part 2): By
December 11th, 2019, Max will read 70 correct words per minute, with fewer than 3
errors per minute, on 2nd grade oral reading fluency progress monitoring probes on 3 of
3 trials.

SUMMARY OF PROGRESS TO DATE: Plan Evaluation

A. Correct Words/Slope: Max’s correct words per minute began at 46 on a 2 nd grade

level back on 9/19/2019. He was tested weekly and scored 58, 37, 42, 60, 82, 74, 78,
70, and 75 correct words per minute. The approximate slope is 4 correct words per
week and 4.2 according to Excel. Max’s progress has ranged from very low to very high.
His lowest correct words per minute was 37, whereas his highest correct words per
minute was 82. He concluded testing at 75 correct words per minute.

B. Error Words: Max’s end goal of error words per minute is 3. He began testing with
10 errors per minute and continued to score the following: 11, 8, 11, 11, 7, 5, 6, 7, and
5. He ranged from the highest number of errors at 11 and got down to 5 errors per
minute. He concluded with 5 errors per minute.

C. Observations: Max was consistent in attendance throughout the months that he was
being progress monitored. He was able to be tested weekly for 10 weeks straight. His
data shows the results that his testing scores were lower at the beginning of the year
and seemed to gradually increase by the final few weeks of testing. I believe this was
due to beginning of the year blues. He had more energy, attention issues, and seemed
to get more irritated at the beginning of the year. As time has passed, his being in
school routine has become more consistent for him and he has adjusted to being in
school after the summer break. His testing scores also were lower when he had
problematic behaviors, such as tapping on his desk, looking around the room, etc.

D. Comparison to Goal: Max’s progress compares to the goal line fairly well. The
original goal was to read 70 words correct per minute by the end of testing. However,

after CBM part 2, I realized that Max’s testing scores were going to be able to reach this
goal and I needed to set a higher goal line for him. After reviewing the data, I changed
his original goal from 70 WRC to 85 WRC. Making this change allowed his goal to
make him stretch a little bit further. He didn’t hit this goal of 85 WRC, but he came
close. Throughout testing he read 82, 78, and ended at 75 correct words per minute.
Although he was short of hitting the specified goal of 85 WRC, he came close to
meeting this number.

Next Steps
A. Summarize Change or No Change to Instruction: I am not making any change to the
student’s instruction. Halfway through testing, I changed Max’s end goal because he was
reading so well. Although he didn’t reach the new goal of 85 WRC and 3 errors, he came
close.
B. Rationale for Change or No Change to Instruction: I am not making changes to Max’s
instruction because he began with 46 WRC and 10 errors and reached the highest point
throughout testing at 82 WRC with 7 errors. Based on this data, I changed his goal from
70 to 85 WRC. At the end of testing, his results were 75 WRC with 5 errors. Although
this didn’t reach the end goal, I believe with more time, he eventually would have.
Because of this, I am not making instructional changes.

Future goal
Based on Max’s progress throughout progress monitoring, I feel very pleased with what I’ve
witnessed. He began at 46 WRC with 10 errors and ended at 75 WRC with 5 errors. He ranged
high and low throughout the weeks, but overall, I feel that he increased a lot. Based on what I’ve
seen, I would choose to set his new goal for the end of the year to 100 WRC with 2 errors. I
believe that he has the potential to reach this goal as he continues to receive instruction and
weekly progress monitoring testing.
By May 2020, Max will be able to read 100 words correctly in one minute with no more than 2
errors on 4/5 probes.

Summary
Max’s oral reading fluency throughout the beginning of the year increased fairly well. He was
on track to reach the goal we set at the beginning of the year, so we chose to bump up the goal in
order to help stretch Max a bit further. He began the year with reading 46 words correct per
minute with 10 errors on a second-grade level. Throughout 10 weeks of progress monitoring, he
dropped down to 37 words read correctly per minute with 8 errors, reached 82 words read
correctly per minute with 7 errors, and concluded testing with 75 words read correctly per minute
with 5 errors. With his end goal being 85 WRC and 3 errors, he was on the right track.
Although Max’s WRC fluctuated throughout testing, he remained on an upwards slope of 4
WRC. Because of this, we chose not to make changes to the instruction he was receiving. We
have set a new end of year goal for Max to be able to read 100 words correct per minute with no
more than 2 errors by May 2020. As we continue to progress monitor Max, we will determine if
any future instruction needs to be changed in order to meet this end of year goal.
