2ND OFFICER HAND OVER NOTES

Here are few tips for your reference.

As a Navigation/GMDSS officer, you are responsible as assistance to the Master for the efficient
operation of all bridge equipments and navigational instruments, preparation of voyage plan,
maintenance and correction of charts and nautical publications.

You are also appointed as Ship Medical Officer, responsible for monitoring the conditions of
medicines and medical equipments, expirations and requisitions as well.

Watchkeeping :

= SEA WATCHES : 0000H – 0400H / 1200H – 1600H

= PORT WATCHES : 0000H – 0600H / 1200H – 1800H

Logs to be maintained EVERY NOON ON NAVIGATION:

CHRONOMETER RATE JOURNAL - DAILY

GMDSS LOG BOOK - DAILY

RADAR LOG BOOK – EACH WATCH

NOON REPORT – DAILY 1200

CHARTS/PUBLICATION :

B.A charts, electronic publucations, ADC, and nautical publications has been corrected UP TO THE
LATEST NTM last on board:47/14

NOTE: BRIDGE LOP TOP USED ONLY FOR NAUTICAL PRODUCTS (2OFF. USE ONLY). ELLECTRONIC
PUBLICATIONS NEED TO BE UPDATED FM INTERNET.

Last inventory of B.A charts and publications was done completely. Edition date correspond
accordingly as per inventory we have on board
IN ADDITIONAL :

Bridge :

1. Read Master’s standing order found in the bridge signed/dated for confirmation.
2. Plot positions every hour and frequently checked position when navigating on confined
waters not only with the GPS position lat/long but also with bearing and distance of any
stationary landmark that you will pass by.
3. If weather permits take compass error and log it on compass error log book.
4. Hand steering to be tested at least once every watch and enter on the bridge logbook.
5. Steering pumps to be changed every noon during your watch.
6. On preparing the bridge on arrival or departure give one hour notice, inform the duty
Engineer, test all bridge equipments and update the AIS.
7. Prepare necessary BCL – checklist ( see bridge checklist file )

CARGO OPERATIONS :
1. Record the time when cargo holds were opened and closed.
2. Record the time when the stevedores are on board or left the vessel, commence and
completion of loading, discharging, ceased and resumesof loading.
3. Record any breakdown of hatch cover, inform the Chief Officer and take necessary action to
avoid delay of cargo operations.
4. Advice Chief Officer if any damage done by the stevedores to the ship structure or cargo, at
every compleation of discharging of cargo CH MATE is to be announced to take pictures of
cargo holds... etc.
5. Check draught at the end of each watch (FWD,MDL,AFT)

BALLASTING OPERATIONS :

 This vessel have five (5) double bottom tanks and three (3) top side tanks ( port and
starboard) +FPT+APT+(CH #3 FOR HEAVY BALLAST) . DBT can fill up using the ballast
pump(s) while the TST can fill up using the fire pump. All valves located in ballast
room(ballast computer)and in ECR ballast computer. All sounding pipes are located on deck.

DE-BALLASTING OPERATIONS :

 We have two (2) ballast pumps. During de-ballasting we normally pump out DBT up to
stripping level but there are times that it’s hard to do even using an eductor. For TopSideTk is
no any problem's.

BERTHING /UN-BERTHTHING :
 You are assign to aft station, together with A\B; O\S and Eng Fitter

PAPER WORKS :

 REQUISITIONS
Charts, publications, medicine and stationaries must be prepare as early as you can and since
we don’t have permanent voyage always coordinate to the Master about this matter.
