ISA AND THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCE OF GRADE 7
STUDENTS OF BALINTOCATOC INTEGRATED SCHOOL
ABSTRACT
Keywords: ISA (Interactive Science Activities), Games, Interactive Learning,
Individual Assessment
This study was conducted to test the effectiveness of employing differentiated
activities in Science. Interactive learning is a hands-on approach to help students
become more engaged and retain more material. With or without a form of
technology, interactive learning helps students strengthen problem solving and
critical thinking skills using Descriptive Quantitative Method.
The respondents were the Fifty-six (56) grade 7 students who are enrolled in
this subject whose class schedule is at 8:30-9:30 from Monday to Friday. Grades
were tabulated and analyzed using paired Sample T-test and Eta square.
Results showed that the third and fourth quarter grades of the students had
significantly increased as compared with their second quarter grades
This further implied that the differentiated Science Activities is an effective
way in improving the grades and performance of students and is therefore highly
recommended for use by other Science Teachers

ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Action Research is a golden opportunity for learning and self development. I
consider myself very lucky and honoured to have so many wonderful people lead me
through in completion of this research. I would like to express my deepest
appreciation to Almighty and all of those who provided me the possibility to complete
this research.
A special gratitude I give to our Schools Division Superintendent Sir.
FLORANTE E. VERGARA, CESO VI, Sir DANTE J. MARCELO, PhD. CESE,
whose contribution in stimulating suggestions and encouragement, helped me to
coordinate my research specially in finishing this Action Research.
I would like to express thanks to my School Head, Sir MELOZAR F. DIZON
for providing opportunity to conduct this action research and constant
encouragement throughout this research which give me confidence.
I am grateful to all of those with whom I have had the pleasure to work during
this and other related projects. Each of the members of the Division Action
Research Committee has provided me extensive personal and professional guidance
and taught me a great deal about Action Research. I would specially like to thank Mr.
MARFIL A. DULAY, the Schools Division Research Committee. He has shown me,
by his example, what a good Researcher (and person) shall be.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
The increased of poor performance and failures in Science subjects in
secondary schools may lead to a big loss in individual students whose aim was to
continue with higher education and pursue a career, but all of that may be
compromised as a result of poor performance in Science subjects.
Science is defined as applied knowledge. It is a subject that has an impact in
everyday activity. It is also defined as a tool that is important to both individuals and
to the nation as a whole in order to survive and to the global economic requirements
(Kibet, Mbgua, Muthaa & Nkanke, 2012). This implies that science subjects continue
to be one of the most important subjects.
As a science teacher, the researcher noticed that some secondary school
learners particularly Grade 7 students lack interest in learning science subjects
which results to the poor performance of the students, this later led to failing grades
as well as poor performance in the National Achievement Test.
This observation called for an investigation of the different factors that might
cause the poor performance of the students in order to improve their Science pass-
rates.
II. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY
Interactive learning is a hands-on approach to help students become more
engaged and retain more material. With or without a form of technology, interactive
learning helps students strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills. Some
ways are hands-on active learning:

1. Solving mysteries, puzzles, and riddles makes learning fun while involving
students in active learning.
2. Use a timer when doing in-class work. Students who know they are “under the
clock” will focus better
3. The students associated body motions with the materials
4. The students create a song, rap, or series of jingles to document what they have
learned during the past unit rather than taking a written quiz or short test
5. Use colour when displaying items in power point presentations and/or the
classroom whiteboard
6. Create MNEMONIC devices.
III. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This action research aimed to improved the performance of students in
Science through the use of ISA (Interactive Science Activities) through Multimedia
integration and differentiated activities.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of performance of the students in Science before project ISA
(Interactive Science Activities) was implemented?
2. What is the level of performance of the students in science after implementing
Project ISA? (Interactive Science Activities)
3. Is there a significant difference on the performance of the students
before and after the implementation of Project ISA? (Interactive Science Activities)

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS
Descriptive Quantitative Method was used as a methodology. In this study the
researcher’s aim was to describe a certain phenomenon. The researcher proposed
to the principal an action research that is perceived to increase the performance of
Grade 7 students in Science. The action research proposal was presented to the
Division Research Committee, after the approval the researchers made differentiated
Interactive Activities in Science and then conduct validation. After the validation the
Interactive Science Activities was conducted.
A. PARTICIPANTS AND SOURCES DATA
The participants of the said activity were the Fifty- six (56) students (20 boys
and 36 girls) of Balintocatoc Integrated School for the school year 2018-2019
B. DATA GATHERING METHODS
The researcher used of Quasi-Experimental Design and Descriptive-
Comparative type of Research to determine the comparison of the Pre and Post Test
result.
C. ETHICAL ISSUES
The researcher through a letter asked permission in the office of the School
Principal to conduct the study, the target are the Grade 7 students of Balintocatoc
Integrated School. Teachers, students-respondents and parents were also informed
of the study conducted to ensure the participation from them.

D. DATA ANALYSIS
This action research used of the following statistical tools to treat the data:
1. To find out the level of performance/skills of Students in Science, Mean,
Percentage and Standard Deviation was employed.
2. To determine the significant difference of the level of performance of the
students in Science before and after the implementation of Project ISA (Interactive
Science Activities). Paired T-Test was used.
V. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS AND REFLECTION
Pre-test and Post-test data were collected and analyzed to examine the effect of
intervention.

The learning gained by the students after the implementation of Project ISA is
greater than before. This could mean that the intervention was able to help the
students improved their performance in Science.

The table shows that it has large effect size or magnitude on the mastery
level of the students which N2: 0.90. It could be inferred that the Project ISA is
effective in improving students performance in Science.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
Based from the above findings, the following conclusions were drawn:
1. Before the intervention was given, students performed poorly in Science. While the
students’ academic performance improved significantly when Project ISA was
introduced.
2. There was a significant difference in the scores of the respondents before and
after the implementation of ISA (Interactive Science Activities).
Recommendations:
Based on the above conclusions the researcher proposes the following
recommendations:
1. ISA may be adapted by the teachers handling Science as one of the teaching
strategies.
2. That the used of multimedia mediated instruction and group activities shall be
intensified.
3. Further similar studies may be conducted to validate the effectiveness of ISA
(Interactive Science Activities)
