Apéndice “A”
Problema No. 1.-Un bloque de peso W se mantiene en equilibrio mediante una cuerda que
pasa sobre tres poleas. Supóngase que la tensión es la misma en los dos lados de cada
polea y que las poleas son partículas en las cuales actúan fuerzas concurrentes. (a) Dibújese
el diagrama de cuerpo libre para cada polea, y (b) determínese las tensiones T, Ta , y Tb , Tc .
No se tomen en consideración los pesos de las poleas.
Problema No. 2.- Un bloque de 10 lb se mantiene en equilibrio sobre un plano inclinado suave
mediante una fuerza F = (-12 i + 3 j) lb y una fuerza P que actúa a lo largo de la línea. Dibuje
el diagrama de cuerpo libre y determine la fuerza P.

Problem Nr. 5 - A circular roller of weight Q = 100 lb and radius r = 6 in hangs by a tie rod
AC = 12 in. and rest against a smooth vertical wall at B, as shown on the picture. Determine
the tension S in the tie rod and the force Rb exerted against the
wall at B.
Ans. S = 115.5 lb; Rb = 57.7 lb.
Problem Nr. 6 - What axial forces does the vertical load P induce in the members of the
system shown on the picture? Neglect the weights of the members themselves and assume an
ideal hinge at A and a perfectly flexible string BC.

Problem Nr. 7 - What axial forces does the vertical load P induce the members of the system
shown on the picture? Make the same idealizing assumptions as in Prob. 6.

Problem Nr. 8 - A right circular roller of weight W rests on a smooth horizontal plane and is
held in position by an inclined bar AC as shown on the picture. Find the tension S in the bar
AC and the vertical reaction Rb at B there is also a horizontal force P acting at C.

Problem Nr. 9 - A pulley A is supported by two bars AB and AC which are hinged at points B
and C to vertical mast EF. Over the pulley hangs a flexible cable DG which is fastened to the
mast at D and carries at the other end G a load Q = 2 tons. Neglecting friction in the pulley,
determine the forces produced in the bars AB and AC. The angles between the various
members are shown in the figure.
Ans. S2 = 3.46 tons; S1 = 0.
Problem Nr. 10 - Two smooth circular cylinders, each of weight W = 100 lb and radius r = 6
in, are connected at their centers by a string AB of length L = 16 in. and rest upon a
horizontal plane, supporting above them a third cylinder of weight Q = 200 lb and radius r =
6 in. Find the force S in the string AB and the pressures produced in the floor at the points
of contact D and E.
Ans. S = 89.41 lb, tension Rd = Rc = 200 lb.

Problem Nr. 11 - Two identical rollers, each of weight Q = 100 lb, are supported by an
inclined plane and a vertical wall as shown on the picture. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the
reactions induced at the points of support A, B, and C.
Ans. Ra = 86.6 lb ; Rb = 144 lb ; Rc = 115 lb.
Problem Nr. 12 - A weight Q is suspended from point B of a cord ABC, the ends pf which are
pulled by equal weights P overhanging small pulleys A and C which are on the same level.
Neglecting the radii of the pulleys, determine the sag BD.
If L = 12 ft, P = 20 lb, Q = 10 lb.
Ans. BD = 1.55 ft.

Problem Nr. 13 - A weight Q is suspended from a small ring C, supported by two cords AC
and BC. The cord AC is fastened at A while the cord BC passes over a frictionless pulley at
C carries the weight P as shown. If P = Q and α = 50°, find the value of the angle β
Ans. β = 80°
Problem Nr. 14 - Two rollers of weight P and Q are connected by a flexible string DE and
rest on two mutually perpendicular planes AB and BC, as shown on the picture. Find
graphically the tension S in the string and the angle φ that it makes with the horizontal when
the system is in equilibrium. The following numerical data are given: P = 60 lb, Q = 100 lb, α
= 30°. Assume that the string is inextensible and passes freely through slots in the smooth
inclined plane AB and BC.

Problem Nr. 15 - A roller of weight W = 1,000 lb rests on a smooth inclined plane and is
kept from rolling down by a string AC as shown in figure. Using the method of projections,
find the tension S in the string and the reaction Rb at the point of contact B.

Problem Nr. 16 – Two equal loads P are supported by a flexible string ABCD, as shown in
figure. Determine the tensile forces and in the portions AC and CD, respectively, of the
string, if the span L = 30 ft and the slag h = 5 ft. Neglect the weight of the string.

Problem Nr. 17 - On the string ACEDB are hung three equal weights Q symmetrically
placed with respect to the vertical line through the mid-point E (Fig.). Determine the value
of the angles β if the other angles are as shown in the figure.

Problem Nr. 18 - To pull up a post, the arrangement shown in figure is used. A cable ABC is
fixed to the post at A and to the frame at C having the portion AB vertical and the portion
BC inclined thereto by a small angle α. The cable BDE fastened to the ring at B and to the
frame at E have the portion BD horizontal and the portion DE inclined to the horizontal by
the small angle β. On the ring at D a man pulls vertically downward with his entire weight Q.

Problem Nr. 19 - Two vertical masts AB and CD are guyed by the wires BF a n d DG, in the

ball is in a position of equilibrium. Also find the pressure R between the ball and the

Problema No. 26 - Las cuerdas AB y BC se sujetan a una estaca en B y se usan para sostener
campaña mostrada. Si la tensión en la cuerda BC es de 490 N, determine: a) El ángulo formado
entre la cuerda BC y la estaca y b) la proyección sobre la estaca ejercida por la cuerda BC en
el punto B.

Problema No. 27 – El collarín se puede mover a lo largo de la barra OA. Una cuerda elástica PC se
une al collarín y al elemento vertical BC. . Sabiendo que la distancia del punto O al punto P es
de 6 in. y que la tensión en la cuerda es de 3 Ib, determine: a) el ángulo entre la cuerda elástica
y la barra OA y b) la proyección sobre OA de la fuerza ejercida por la cuerda PC en el punto P.
Problema No. 28 – El collarín P se puede mover a lo largo de la barra OA. Una cuerda elástica PC
esta unida al collarín y al elemento vertical BC. Determine la distancia de O a P para la cual la
cuerda PC y la barra OA son mutuamente perpendiculares.
Problema No. 29 - Se diseña un trípode de manera que soporte una cámara de peso W. La
cámara se encuentra a una altura h sobre el suelo cuando las patas del trípode forman un
triangulo equilátero ABC de lado a. Obténgase la magnitud de las fuerzas que actúan en las
patas suponiendo que comparten igualmente la carga y que las fuerzas son axiales en las
patas.

Problem Nr. 33 -Two tanks are separated by an inclined partition the plane of which makes
60° with the horizontal as shown in the Fig. In this partition there is a rectangular opening 1
ft. wide and 4 ft. long which is closed by a gate hinged along AA as shown. If water ( w=
62.4 lb / ft3) stands at the level shown on the left of the gate, what vertical pull S applied at
B will be required to open the gate against the water pressure?
Ans. S= 557 lb.
Problem Nr. 34 - Calculate the vertical pull S necessary to open the gate in Fig D. if the
water stands at the depth H = 6 ft on the left side of the gate.
Ans. S= 1,210 lb.
Problem Nr. 35 - A gravity dam having a trapezoidal cross section is submitted to water
pressure against its vertical face, as shown in the Fig. E. If the specific weight of water is W
and that of masonry 2.5W, find the minimum width b at the base for which the dam will have a
factor of safety of 2 against overturning about B.

Problem Nr. 36 - When closed a vertical gate Fig F. is supported along the lines AA and BB
normal to the plane of the figure and is submitted to the action of water pressure from both
sides, as indicate in the figure. If the weight of water per unit volume is w = 62.4 lb / ft3,
find the intensities Pa and Pb of the reactions developed by the supports, assuming them to
be uniformly distributed along AA and BB.

a= 10 ft, b= 6 ft, h = 5 ft, l =40 ft.

Problem Nr. 44 - Determine the reaction at A and the force S in the bar DE due to the action
of the loads P and Q applied to the crane, as shown in the (Fig. E). Neglect the weight of the
crane and assume ideal hinges at A, D and E. Assume that P = 550 lb, Q = 300 lb, a= 6 ft.
Ans. Ra = 1,140 lb; S = 1,555 lb, compression.
Problem Nr. 45 - A horizontal platform CD carries a truck of weight Q (Fig. F) and is rigidly
attached to the vertical bar AB, which is hinged at the bottom to the horizontal bar AE and at
the top to the horizontal lever BFG. Determine the weight Q of the truck if a known weight W
hanging at G holds the platform and its load in equilibrium. The weight of the empty platform is
just balanced by that of the level.

se muestra. Si se sabe que la esquina del obstáculo en A es rugosa, encuéntrense la tensión

la tensión del cable, b) la reacción en A cuando a = 60 mm.
Problema No. 53 - Un trabajador empuja una carretilla de 120 lb sobre una rampa inclinada
de 18° cuando encuentra un obstáculo de 1.4 in en D. Determínese la magnitud y la dirección
de: a) la fuerza que él debe aplicar en cada asa para que la rueda empiece a pasar sobre el
obstáculo, b) la reacción correspondiente en D. (Sugerencia. Conforme empieza a rotar con
respecto a D, la rueda es un cuerpo sujeto a dos fuerzas.)

Problem Nr. 69- A prismatic timber of weight W and length l is supported horizontally
between two fixed fulcrums A and B, as shown (Fig. K). If the coefficient of friction between
the timber and each fulcrum is μ, find the magnitude of a force P applied as shown that will
cause impeding sliding of the timber to the right. The following numerical data are given: W =
100 lb, a = 20 in, h = 12 in,

Problem Nr. 196 - A solid right circular cone of altitude h = 12 in. and radius of base r = 3
in. has its center of gravity C on its geometric axis at the distance h/4 = 3 in. above the
base. This cone rests on an inclined plane AB, which makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal
and for which the coefficient of friction is μ = 0.5 (Fig. O). A horizontal force P is applied to
the vertex O of the cone and lying in the vertical plane as shown. Find the maximum and
minimum values of P consistent with equilibrium of the cone if the weight W = 10 lb.

Problem Nr. 197 - A short semicircular right cylinder of radius r and weight W rests on a
horizontal surface and is pulled at right angles to its geometric axis by a horizontal force P
applied at the middle B of the front edge (Fig. P). Find the angle α that the flat face will make
with the horizontal plane just before sliding begins if the coefficient of friction at the line of
contact A is μ. The gravity force W must be considered as acting at the center of gravity C
as shown in the figure.
