Acupressure 101
What is Acupressure?
Acupressure is a traditional healing technique that has been inherited from
generation to generation for over three thousand years in China. It consists in
locating particular areas of the body and stimulating these areas underneath the
skin with a system of massages. This stimulation alters some processes and
certain biochemical and physiological conditions that help you feel better.
In other words, Acupressure is a massage made in specific points located along
the body with the purpose of alleviating a variety of symptoms and pains.
Sounds too simple? It is, just read a bit more and see how it works its magic and
what it can do for you.
Acupressure is usually used for treating pain in general, like headaches, back
pain, arthritis, flu, asthma, nervous tension and sinusitis. It also works amazingly
well for insomnia, nervousness and nausea.
Today we know that acupressure releases natural analgesics against pain like
endorphins, and these work augmenting our sensation of wellness and blocking
transmissions and signs of pain through the nerves. But we’ll get into this in just
a moment.
Have you heard of acupuncture? Don’t worry just yet, I promise you won’t be
needing needles for this. This technique has its origin in the ancient China and is
related with acupuncture. Even though Acupressure and acupuncture work with
the same points in the body, in acupressure we use our fingers to apply pressure
to eliminate symptoms instead of needles.
For this reason, many people refer to Acupressure as the “needless
acupuncture.” This means you can get all the benefits of acupuncture, but only
using your fingers.
Acupressure Fundamentals
You are energy; your body is energy. There’s a flow of energy that runs through
your system. It’s what gives you life, and this vital energy inside of you moves
through invisible channels in the organism.
What Acupressure does is liberate these channels to prevent blockage, pain and
disease.
You see, in Acupressure, as in all medicinal techniques that come from China,
the body is considered as a small part of the universe, and it’s subject to its laws,
harmony and balance principles. This is why they are based in ideas like the yin
and yang
The yin is associated with cold, the feminine, descending energy, the inside,
darkness and humidity. The yang can be described as heat, male, active, upwards
energy, the outside, light and dryness. Now, the Qi is the vital energy found in
foods, air, water, and sunlight. The Qi moves through the body in channels
called meridians.
There are twelve great meridians in the body, and they correspond to the twelve
main organs classified by Chinese medicine. When the Qi energy is not flowing
properly, is because there’s an unbalance in the organs, and this is when sickness
appears in your body.
Chinese medicine doesn't distinguish among veins, arteries and nerves. It
explains the functioning of the human body as a group of strengths that needs to
be balanced in order to regulate all vital functions. Any health symptom implies
there’s an energy unbalance, so it’s necessary to complement the yin and yang
with each other.
Acupressure points of treatment are found along the meridians, and when there’s
sickness your Qi, which travels through the meridians is debilitated.
When you interact with these points, you can reduce the pain located in the way
of these meridians. There are thousands of points that can be located along the
body, but don’t worry you don’t need to know them all! We’ll leave that for
people that have a profound knowledge of this technique, and we’ll focus only in
the miracle points that will alleviate your headaches and migraine.
How Does Acupressure Works?
As you already know, there are several points of pressure that can be easily
located for the treatment of common ailments in diverse parts of the body. There
are many ways of working these points; pressure can be applied with the thumbs,
fingers, knees and the palm of the hands. Depending on the causes, the
alleviation of pain can be immediate, and some other problems that are more
persistent can take a little longer to heal.
Everyone can practice acupressure, and you don’t need to go visit a professional
to start feeling better. Basically, what you need is to be able to locate these
points and learn how to apply pressure with your fingers for a relatively short
time.
It sounds simple, and believe it or not, you can enjoy from all Acupressure
benefits just by learning what this book contains. Now, you might be asking
yourself, does this really work? We’ll get into that and the most effective and
proven techniques to alleviate your migraine in just a while, so keep reading!
I’ll finish this section saying that the best part of Acupressure is that all you need
to start practicing this healing and ancient science are YOUR HANDS. And
even though in Acupressure the same points of the body that are used in
acupuncture are utilized, there’s no need to use needles. This is the best part of
it! Especially if you are like me and have a serious “needle-phobia.” So if you
are not into the whole needle thing, you can still enjoy from the incredible
benefits of this millenary art.
Science Behind Acupressure
When Acupressure came to western medicine, it was catalogued in the
alternative medicine group. But every day, more and more physicians pay closer
attention to these types of techniques, because each day we all discover that what
was considered ancient is based in an exhaustive knowledge and research of the
human body.
In a study conducted recently, they found a correlation between acupuncture
points and the points known as trigger points in western medicine with a
coincidence of an 84%. This is because there’s a high tuning between such
points and the superficial neurological system.
In a magnetic resonance study they discovered that some trigger points located
in the fascia –the membrane that covers and connects your organs, bones and
muscles, along the body-correspond to the same points of acupressure. This
means that by stimulating these zones of your body, and by the way the layers
under your skin are organized it’s possible to reach and influence other organs,
just as acupressure suggests.
You will corroborate this later on. I’ll teach you how to locate points in your
legs, feet and hands that do miracles when you are having a terrible headache.
But, we’ll get into this in the chapter about treating migraines, so don’t rush.
You are almost there.
All I can say now is that even though you don’t see the connection between your
leg and your head, you will be able to FEEL it at the end of this book.
The explanation of western medicine is that the points stimulated with
acupressure are areas of the body that have electric sensitivity. By massaging
such areas, you stimulate many sensorial receptors which at the same time
produce nervous stimuli and transmit impulses to the hypothalamic system in the
base of the brain.
According to the National Health Institute it has been PROVEN that acupressure
works amazingly well alleviating pain and is excellent for relaxing and sleeping
better.
So, I’m talking about a science, an art that’s been around for thousands of years.
Acupressure it’s a recognized medicinal technique and it works.
Effects of Acupressure
Acupressure is a very efficient method with which you can obtain satisfactory
results in a relatively short period of time, and of course, without carrying any
collateral effects.
You probably already know that the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus are
responsible for the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters and natural
hormones that function as analgesics in your organism.
What you are about to experience with Acupressure starts as a stimulus in
certain areas of your body and ends with the release of hormones that alleviate
pain.
It’s estimated that endorphins are two hundred times more powerful than
morphine! Besides, they play an important role in the endocrine system.
Endorphins are powerful, and they can be the difference between feeling pain or
relief. So, in Acupressure we’ll stimulate the body in many different ways to
release these little peptides that will be your best friends.
Another effect that is usually linked with acupressure is the regulation of
serotonin in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that controls mood, so
acupressure is also great for making you feel happy. And, who doesn’t want to
be happier these days?
The most common physiological effects after an acupressure session are pain
relief, improved blood circulation, inflammation reduction, diminishment of
muscle spasms and an augment of lymphocytes, which stimulate the immune
system.
Benefits of Acupressure
Even though this method hasn’t been used for that many years, its effectiveness
has been proved for many ailments. It gives very positive effects and is favorable
for many patients that opt to try this millenary therapeutic technique.
Is hard to name all the diseases that can be treated with acupressure, however,
making a summary I could name some in which the best results have been
achieved. Headaches, migraines, muscle pain, stomach, ocular and ear
conditions, asthma, arthritis, stress…
Acupressure regulates the nervous system, balances the peripheral system, can
act as an anesthetic and also has analgesic effects.
Acupressure stimulates auto-healing, it prevents diseases and improves energy
levels in the organism. It is estimated that the pressure you apply regulates Qi
energy in the body.
As you can see, the benefits of Acupressure are uncountable, and you can start
enjoying them today. All that you need you already have it with you: your hands
and this book!
Migraine & Acupressure
Migraine or Headache?
Headaches are one of the most common forms of pain in the world, but many
people suffer from different types of headaches. A common headache is usually
characterized by mild pain and usually lasts only a few hours, but if there’s an
underlying cause, or if it’s a severe headache it can bother you for days.
In general, we could say that headaches are very common, and that everyone has
suffered from a headache at least once in their lifetime. Headaches are usually
caused by stress or emotional problems and tend to disappear on their own or
with pain killers. But, hopefully after reading this book you can find a better
solution for this!
Now, migraines are a bit more serious than common headaches. It is important
to remember that not all headaches are migraines, so check out this useful
information and remember to visit a qualified physician if your headaches persist
for many days or are accompanied by other symptoms.
Migraine is usually a throbbing and intense pain, it’s common to feel this pain in
only one side of the head, although it can be experienced in both sides in some
cases. Migraine usually comes with a crisis of intense pain that can impede
physical activity and many times is accompanied with all or one of these
symptoms.
SYMPTOMES OF MIGRAINE CONSIST OF
Pain in one side of the head
Throbbing intense pain
Pain is aggravated with regular daily activities
Sensitivity to light and noise
Nausea
Vomits
Lethargy
Apathy
Depression
Weakness
Tiredness
Light and noise sensitivity
Many people who suffer from migraines have some symptoms even before it
starts, and this is the perfect time to start dealing with this terrible ailment. Now,
is when you can stop the awful pain from attacking you, so don’t overthink it, do
something!
Some symptoms that precede migraine episodes are visual alterations, as bright
lights, blurry vision or blind spots. All this can be accompanied by photophobia
symptoms.
Migraine Triggers
If you have been diagnosed with migraines you probably already know what
triggers these episodes in you.
TRIGGERS FOR MIGRAINE CAN BE
Hormonal changes
Bright light
Intense sounds
Weather changes
Lack of sleep
Skipping meals
Change in eating habits
In many people stress promotes migraine episodes
Food can be very specific to each person, and there’s not one food in specific that is a general rule,
but the following list includes some foods that almost always triggers migraines:
Cheese
Chocolates
Caffeine
Citric
Alcoholic beverages
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) a preservative found in foods
Effects of Migraine in Your Life
Migraine affects approximately 6% of men and 15-18% of women in the world
and is a disorder that causes an ample spectrum of disabilities.
Migraines can have a negative effect in life quality. It’s very hard to carry out
daily activities with a throbbing and constant pain. Many people who suffer from
migraine don’t go to work or skip classes to be able to deal with the symptoms.
Some even have to stop attending to family activities or social meetings because
of a migraine episode or crisis.
It’s been demonstrated there’s a close relation between migraine and poor
working performance. Light, noise, and excessive pain can be too much to deal
with when surrounded by other people so it can also affect your social life.
IF YOU SUFFER FROM MIGRAINE YOU COULD SUFFER FROM
Mood swings
Conduct changes
Decreased energy level
Depression
Common Drugs and Migraine
Everyone’s interest for organic foods and all kinds of natural products grows and
grows more every day. And, well, there’s a good reason for this: natural things
are healthier.
For me, this is one of the best things of Acupressure, I think that besides the fact
there’s no need of using needles for feeling better, this is it for me.
Acupressure is 100% natural, and if you do everything correctly, you can throw
those toxic little bottles with painkillers away.
SIDE-EFFECTS FROM DRUGS MAY CONSIST
Gastric irritation

Extraordinary Points and Effective
Techniques for Alleviating Headaches and
Migraines
Before Getting Started
I know you probably are excited, and you want to know all about these magical
points, and we’re almost there. But, before getting started there are some things
you need to know to ensure your safety and to make the most of this millenary
science.
Recommendations
DO NOT USE ACCUPRESSURE IF
You have swelling or inflammation
You have open wounds, blisters or skin eruptions
You suffer from varicose veins
You suspect you suffer or you suffer from a life threatening disease or have serious medical problems
You are pregnant – especially in the first trimester
You are excessively debilitated by an ailment or chronic disease
You suffer or suspect you suffer from a heart disease
You suffer from a circulatory disease as thrombosis or angina
You suffer from severe hypertension
Note I’ll be giving additional recommendations for some of the Acupressure
points we’ll go through in this book, but in general it’s important you pay close
attention to the ones mentioned above.
General Considerations
Apply gentle, slow and rhythmic pressure. What you are doing is enabling the
skin layers for the organs to respond. NEVER press any area abruptly.
It’s important you help your body by breathing correctly. Air is life, and there’s
no better way than giving life to your system than filling your lungs with fresh
air. When you breathe deeply using your stomach, you oxygenate your cells and
help your body heal faster.
Acupressure releases tension and your Qi energy focuses in healing. For this
reason your body temperature decreases and your resistance to cold is
diminished. So, after an acupressure session is important you have extra clothing
to keep you warm.
Common Hand Positions
As I told you before, there are many ways of applying pressure, but we’ll go
through the three most common hand positions, and the ones you’ll be using for
migraine and headaches relief.
THREE TYPES OF HAND POSITIONS
Thumbs Fingertips – is the most common hand position for massaging. It requires a little practice to
strengthen the muscle.
Index Fingertips – this is recommended when you apply direct pressure on small areas.
Index, Middle and Ring Fingertips –you will use the three fingers when there’s need of applying
prolonged pressure
Having said this, it’s time to get into the real step-by-step workout for getting rid
of a bad headache or migraine. So get ready to sweat it out! Just kidding, no
sweating I promise.
Step-By-Step Routine For Alleviating
Common Headaches
So let’s say you had a terrible day at work, and you are starting to feel the
symptoms of what you know will turn into an annoying headache. But, don’t
pick that aspirin bottle just yet, try this instead.
1.
Yintang-Third Eye Point
In the first chapter, we talked about the meridians and how energy is canalized
through these invisible channels. But, in Acupressure we can also find some
“extra points” or “extraordinary points” as others call them, to the regions that
are not associated to any meridian in particular. We’ll start this Acupressure
session with the Yintang, which is one of these extraordinary points I’m telling
you about.
It’s easy to find, right between your eyebrows. The Third Eye point is great for
calming your mind, for anxiety, insomnia, stress and frontal headaches.
APPLICATION
Remember is important to focus in your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose, hold the air
in your lungs for five seconds and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this three times or
until you are relaxed.
Now, place your right index or thumb finger on this point. Apply pressure continuously moving the
finger upwards for one minute.
Switch hands and repeat the same sequence before moving to the next point.
2. Feng Chi-Wind Pool Point
This is also called the GB-20 acupressure point. To locate it, put your fingers in
the base of your skull and move them slowly on top of the back of the neck.
You’ll find two depressions at the side of the tendons of the trapezius muscle.
The Wind Pool point is also called by many the “acupressure treasure.” And this
is why it’s the second step towards getting rid of that pain. When you massage
this point you will find relief for all head pains, especially occipital headaches.
APPLICATION
Put your index fingertips in the Feng Chi point and massage in circles and in a counter-clockwise
direction, applying medium to moderate pressure for one minute.
Relax for a minute and repeat one more time before moving on.
3.
Ba Hui-Hundred Convergences Point
This is the GV-20 point and as you can see in the picture it’s located right in the
top of your head. To locate it correctly, draw an imaginary line from one of your
ears to the other one, passing through the head. Then draw another imaginary
line that goes from the middle of your eyebrows upwards, in your neck’s
direction. The point in where these two imaginary lines cross in the top of your
head is where the Ba Hui Point is located.
The first two points you worked until now are for relaxing, and for your body to
get ready. The real magic is just starting because The Hundred Convergences
point is the main point for treating headaches, and now, your body will really
start releasing endorphins.
APPLICATION
For stimulating this point is important you use medium to strong pressure. When I say strong
pressure I mean a pressure that is enough for you to feel it, not to hurt yourself, so take it easy!
Place your thumb on the GV-20 point and apply pressure for ten seconds. Release pressure and
count to ten.
Repeat the same sequence ten times, I bet you will feel better, but we’re done yet.
4.
Han Yan-Forehead Fullness
This point is found in the Gall Bladder meridian and is the GB-4 acupressure
point. Is located within the hairline of the temporal region and is a head local
point, this means it has extremely wonderful effects for headaches.
APPLICATION
This is a local and small point, so you will use the hand position number two; only your index
fingertips. First, you will apply moderate pressure on both sides, and release after ten seconds
simultaneously.
Repeat this four more times and relax.
Now, again simultaneously and using only your index fingers, you will massage the GB-4 points
doing little circles. Please, do this gently and slowly, in a rhythmic way and a counter-clockwise
direction.
Do this for one minute, relax and move to the next point.
5.
Ying Xiang-Welcome Fragrance
This is the LI-20 acupressure point and belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian.
It’s easy to find in either cheek, is just below the nostril in the nasolabial groove.
This point is used for treating allergies, nasal discharge and sinusitis. I included
this because when your head is about to explode when you have a flu, this
combined with the previous points work as a charm.
If you are short on time, or don’t have a flu you can skip this, but I recommend
you give it a try.
APPLICATION
After locating the point, you can either work with one at a time or simultaneously.
Apply pressure for ten seconds and release. Repeat this five times.
6.
Xing Jiang-Walk Between
This point is located in the Liver Meridian, and it’s also called the Liv-2 Point.
As you can see in the picture, is located on the foot between the big toe and the
second toe. In general, this point is used to reduce any kind of pain. So, when it’s
used in combination with the other points for treating headaches, the results are
amazing.
Note Never use this point when you are weak or feel low in energy.
APPLICATION
Locate your point on one foot first and apply moderate tension with your index finger. Then start
moving your finger in circles in a counter-clockwise direction.
Do this for one minute and change sides. Do the same thing in your other foot.
Repeat this massage three times.
So there you go! You have successfully located six acupuncture points that will
eliminate that headache. As you could see, this was not difficult at all. You feel
better, energized, and the best part of all, you did it at home with your hands!
I know, what you’re thinking, what if I’m suffering from a severe migraine
episode? Don’t worry, just turn the page!
Step-By-Step Routine For Alleviating
Migraine
You are starting to feel the symptoms with every inch of your body. The
throbbing and intense pain in the side of your head is killing you. But it’s too
late, there’s nothing you can do now…wait a second, there is something. Try
this!
1. Taiyang-Great Sun Point
The Taiyang is also an extraordinary point. It does not belong to any meridian in
particular. For me, this is truly extraordinary and super effective for alleviating
migraine or temporal, one-sided headaches, this is why we’ll begin this.
Migraines are a serious thing, so we have to attack the problem aggressively, and
this is the best way to start.
You locate this point at the temples region, in a depression about one finger
posterior to the middle point of the lateral end of the eyebrow.
APPLICATION
Lie down in a place where you can relax. I want you to close your eyes and breathe in deeply
through your nose and then exhale through your mouth. Do this three times or until you feel
completely relaxed.
Next, pose your thumbs on the point you previously located. Simultaneously apply medium to
intense pressure and massage these points rotating your thumbs gently in a counter-clockwise
direction.
Do this for one minute, relax and repeat the procedure two more times before moving to the next
point.
2.
Jiang Jing-Shoulder Well Point
The GB-21 point is easy to find, it’s on the shoulder directly above the nipple.
This is a head local point and I chose it because is very powerful.
Note Contraindicated during pregnancy. It can induce labor so if you are
pregnant please don’t stimulate this point. If you are pregnant, you can replace
this with the Feng Chi Point used in the previous sequence.
APPLICATION
Even though this point is easy to find is kind of hard to get to it and apply pressure correctly. It’s
very important that when you do this, your arms are completely relaxed. So keep this in mind.
It’s easier if you use only your index fingertips when you apply pressure in this point, but if you
cross your hands in the back, you will find the thumbs are a better option. I don’t recommend
crossing your hands because is hard to maintain the arms relaxed in this position, but the truth is
however you feel more comfortable is fine.
Apply medium pressure continuously for one minute, release and relax. Repeat this four more times
and continue.
Now, massage doing small circles in a counter-clockwise direction for one minute and relax. Repeat
two more times and move to the next point.
3.
Ba Hui-Hundred Convergences Point
This is the same GV-20 point you used in the common headache sequence, but
you will use it again. Remember this is the main point for treating headaches, so
I had to include it.
APPLICATION
Stimulate this point, using medium to strong pressure. Don’t let the Hercules in you come out, don’t
hurt yourself, just use enough pressure.
Place your thumb on the GV-20 point and apply pressure for ten seconds. Release pressure and
count to ten.
Repeat ten times and continue.
4.
Touwei-Head Corner Point
This is the ST-8 acupressure point, and as its name says, is located right in the
head corner on both sides of the head. It is used for dealing with splitting
headaches, headaches with nausea, vomiting, headaches with eye pain and
severe migraines.
APPLICATION
To make the most of this method, close your eyes.
You will use the third-hand position I explained a little earlier in this chapter. Place your index,
middle and ring fingers in the ST-8 point. We are using the three fingers because this massage will
be a little longer than the ones you’ve seen until now. By using this hand position, you don’t need to
apply strong pressure, and you divide the pressure between the three fingers and don’t get tired.
Massage the Touwei Point in small circles in a counter-clockwise direction applying moderate
pressure. You will do this for three minutes without stopping.
Relax for a minute and repeat the exercise one time before moving to the next point.
5.
Guang Ming-Bright Light Point
The GB-37 acupressure point is found on the lateral aspect of the lower leg, right
in the anterior border of the fibula. It’s useful for all eye problems, as redness
and itching, but alleviates headaches that affect the region around the eyes and
the temporal, infra/supraorbital migraines.
APPLICATION
After locating this point apply gentle pressure using your thumb for one minute.
Now, you will do the same thing but with your other leg. Make sure you apply the same pressure on
both legs and during the same time. Never work one side more than the other. It’s important they
are equally treated.
6. Tiang Chong-Celestial Hub/Fu Bai-Floating White-Tou Qiao-Head
Portal Yin/Wan Gu-Completion Bone
As you can see in the picture, these are four points. They are the GB-9, GB-10,
GB-11, GB-12 acupressure points. These four points are local points for
headaches, and I’m listing them together because they should be used at the
same time for better results. To locate them, place your index, middle, ring and
little fingers behind your ear and move them slowly until you find a small
depression.
APPLICATION
Use gentle pressure and massage doing little circles in a counter-clockwise direction.
Do this for sixty seconds and then switch hands and sides.
Repeat the sequence alternating between both sides four more times.
Remember is super important to apply the same pressure and to do the massage for the same
amount of time in both sides.
7.
Hegu-Union Valley Point
We are in the Large Intestine Meridian now, and this is why this point is the LI-
4. I believe this is one of the most used points in Acupressure, and there’s a good
reason for this. It really works! It’s great for alleviating pain in many parts of the
body, and is usually used with other points depending on what type of pain you
are suffering. We are interested in migraines and headaches, so you will use this
in combination with all the other points to end this routine.
But, first let’s locate this miracle point. An easy way to do this is squeezing your
