Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Dengvaxia has now become a subject to controversy following Sanofi’s
recent analysis which suggests that the vaccine may put some people at an
increased risk of a more severe form of dengue (The New York Times. Drug
company under fire after revealing dengue vaccine may harm some,2017).
Dengvaxia was found to reduce the overall risk of severe dengue and
hospitalizations due to this disease (World Health Organization,2017). This
protection, however, was more apparent in those who had a prior history of dengue
infection. Sanofi recently discovered that individuals who have never had a dengue
infection before pose a significantly higher risk of a more severe form of the
disease and hospitalizations with Dengvaxia than if they had not been vaccinated
against dengue at all (World Health Organization,2017).
In MNHS SHS which is located in Valenzuela City there are students that
was injected by dengvaxia and the parents of this students may feel emotional
anxiety. The researchers want to conduct this study to know the parent perception
about dengue vaccine. Dengvaxia is a vaccine used to prevent dengue. This
vaccine is only recommended on those who have previously had dengue fever. It
is given as three injections over a year. The patient that was injected by dengue
vaccine will experience headache pain at the site of injection, and general muscle
pains severe side effects may include anaphylaxis. Injecting dengvaxia is not
recommended in people with poor immune system.
Considering dengue infection rates reach up to 90% in Philippines, majority
of the school children who were inoculated with Dengvaxia will get the protective
benefits of the vaccine (The New York Times. Drug company under fire after
revealing dengue vaccine may harm some,2017). This projection, however, means
that at least 10% or around 80000 of those children who do not have a prior history
of dengue infection are now at an increased risk of developing severe dengue
(ABS-CBN News. PAO sees “pattern” in deaths of 4 Dengvaxia recipients,2018).
Dengvaxia’s sale and distribution has been suspended in Philippines but due to
the fear resulting from this controversy, parents are now refusing to vaccinate their
children even against vaccine preventable diseases, giving rise to a phenomenon
known as Vaccine Hesitancy (The Telegraph. Philippines immunisation rates
plummet amid Dengue vaccination scare,2018)
Even today, 1 in 5 children worldwide fail to receive routine immunization,
and about 1.5 million children die each year of diseases that could be prevented
by vaccination (World Health Organization,2015). Concern over vaccine safety is
one of the most dominant reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Earlier, these concerns
were mainly due to widely circulating media reports highlighting a rare occurrence
of an adverse reaction to a vaccine, or associating certain disorders to vaccines or
their components (McKee C, Bohannon K,2016). Most of these concerns,
however, were based on rumors rather than the facts and yet somehow managed
to instill fear in the hearts and minds of parents. Unfortunately, the crisis that we
are dealing with now is based on results from clinical trials backed up by autopsies
linking some deaths to Dengvaxia (ABS-CBN News. PAO sees “pattern” in deaths
of 4 Dengvaxia recipients,2018).
The researchers conduct this study on the parents of student injected by
dengvaxia, maybe father or mother. Researchers choose two parents of student
injected by dengvaxia they are the participant. The results of this study will help
the parents the study can help them to being aware on their child. The result of the
study will help the parents of the student to think and decide carefully because they
are the ones to give permissions whether their children will get injections or not.
This will also help them to realize that every decision they will made is also their
accountability. The results of this study will help the students, the study can make
them fully aware of their parent feelings if they were to be injected by dengvaxia,
not just in injecting dengvaxia but also to the other decision they will made. The
results of this study will help the Department of Health (DOH), the result of the
study helps them to study carefully the medicine before they release it to the
citizens and not to repeat the same mistakes again. Also, this study will help them
to learn from mistakes because every medicine they approve can change
someone’s lives like the students as well and not just the student or someone but
also its parents who are suffering from emotional anxiety. The results of this study
will help the future researchers, the findings of the study will serve as a reference
material and a guide for future researchers who wish to conduct the same
experimental study or any related to dengvaxia
The purpose of this research is to examine the emotional anxiety of parent

Statement of the Problem
This study focuses on how the emotional anxiety of parents of Grade 11
Students which are injected by Dengvaxia. Specifically, this study seeks to give
answers the following statement of the problem:
1. How does Parents feel after their children got injected by Dengvaxia?
2. Why do parents feel emotional anxiety knowing that their children is injected by
anti-dengue vaccine?
3. What are things the parents did to amend their emotional anxiety knowing that
their children got injected by Dengvaxia?
Significance of the Study
The study focuses on identifying the Emotional Anxiety of Parent of Grade
11 Students of Malinta National High School SHS Injected by Dengvaxia.
Moreover, the result of the study will be beneficial to the following:
To the students:
The study can make them fully aware of their Parent’s feeling if they were to
be injected by Dengvaxia, not just in terms of injecting Dengvaxia but also to the
other decision they will made.
To the parents:
The result of the study will help the parent of the students to think and decide
carefully because they are the ones to give permissions whether their children will
get injections or not. This will also help them to realize that every decisions they
will made is also their accountability.
To the Department of Health :(DOH)
The result of the study helps them to study carefully the medicine before they
release it to the citizens and not to repeat the same mistake again. Also, this study
will help them to learn from mistakes because every medicine they approve can
change someone’s lives like the students as well and not just the students or
someone but also its parents who suffering from emotional anxiety.
And to the Future Researchers:
The findings of the study will serve as reference material and a guide for
future researchers who wish to conduct the same experimental study or any
related to Dengvaxia.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
This study focuses on the emotional anxiety of the parents. It will specifically
focus on parent’s emotional anxiety. This study will only deal on the coverage of
the emotional anxiety connected to Dengvaxia injection. Moreover, this will
enumerate and gave the reasons and the things to amend the emotional anxiety
of parents concerning their children that was injected by dengvaxia at the end of
the study. This will not cover the other reasons why the parents are having
emotional anxiety except for the fact their children was injected by Dengvaxia that
can be really alarming for them.
The respondents of this study will only be limited to the Parents of students
that are currently studying at Malinta National High School-Senior High School.
The students that are going to be involved in this study will be limited to those who
are injected by Dengvaxia. Furthermore, the parents of said students that was
injected by Dengvaxia will respondents of this study. Any data and information that
will be given by the parents should only be connected and important in this study.
Objectives of the study
The main objective of the study is to examine the emotional anxiety of parent of
students injected by dengvaxia.
To know how dengvaxia affect the emotional feelings of the parent of
students injected by dengvaxia.
To determine how did parents overcome the emotional anxiety about
dengvaxia.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter presents the releated literature and studies after the thorough
and in-depth search done by the researchers. This will also presents the synthesis
of the art to fully understand the research to be done.
According to Valido et al., (2018). During the controversy, most child injected
by dengue vaccine was died. This has caused stress and anxiety among parents.
They were fearful for their child’s health. Parents were hypervigilant on their
children’s health and changed their health seeking behavior. They preferred
private health practitioners. Parents suffered both from an emotional turmoil and
economic loss. The vaccination experience is generally regretted. Interestingly,
anger towards government though is not dominantly seen as the parents
rationalize that they consented to the vaccination.
As stated Dr. Erfe (2018). The Public Attorney's Office (PAO) Forensics
Division led by Dr. Erwin Erfe had performed forensic autopsies on 15 children,
who allegedly died of severe dengue even after they were given the vaccine.
Based on media reports, Erfe conducted forensic examinations and found a
pattern of severe bleeding, enlarged internal organs and unusually quick death
after the patient started feeling sick. Erfe also says histopathological examination
of tissue samples from 10 year old Anjielica Pestilos who died last December
confirm the deadly effects of the vaccine.
Based on Mara Cepeda (2018).There are kids injected by dengue vaccine
without the consent of their [Link], who hails from Muntinlupa City, said
her child Mark was given the vaccine in school through the DOH’s now-
suspende dengue vaccination program without her consent. She only found out
about the vaccination when Mark’s classmates told her it about it after the his death
on January 30, 2018. “Biktima po siya ng dengue vaccine. Maawa naman po kayo!
Humihingi kami ng katarungan,” said Ebunia who started sobbing at the Senate
hall. According to Ebunia, her child started getting on and off fever starting the
morning of January 29, 2018 At 7 pm, Mark’s stool already had blood. He died
around 24 hours later according to his mother.“Nilalagnat lang po ‘yong aking
anak.
said. Elipane from San Isidro, Nueva Ecija had a similar account. She was able to
give her consent for her disabled child to get the first dose of Sanofi Pasteur’s
Dengvaxia dengue vaccine. But she was no longer asked to give her consent for
naduduwal na,” said Elipane.
As stated by Laura E. Brumariuab & Kathryn A. Kerns (2014). Mother-child
relationships were examined in the study whether the several aspects of
communication information relate to child anxiety symptoms. Mother and child
behaviors that are related to the emotion communication were coded based on
videotaped mother-child interactions in a sample of 87 ranging from 10-12 years
old, and the children that were reported on their anxiety [Link] of
more anxious children were less supportive in that they engaged more in
psychologically controlling behaviors designed to manipulate the child's emotional
state, exhibited less warmth and interest in the child, and were less elaborative
during conversations about an emotionally negative event. Moreover, anxious
children showed greater affect intensity and lower congruency of emotions and
behaviors, and were less engaged in the conversation. The study tells that there
is a significant variance of mother and child emotion communication in terms of
child anxiety. The results showed that how mothers and children approached
emotion-related conversations is important for child anxiety, and highlighted the
need to consider mother and child behaviors related to emotion communication in
assessment and interventions with anxious children.
According to Abs Cbn News (2017). Two weeks after alarms were raised
against the dengue vaccine, a mom gives voice to the fear of Filipino parents
whose children were given the dengue vaccine Dengvaxia. Aris alpay said “Gusto
Janette
Garin was the Department of Health (DOH) secretary when the P3.5 billion national
dengue immunization program was launched. Dengvaxia was already
administered to 830,000 school children when it was halted after Sanofi Pasteur,
the French pharmaceutical company and manufacturer of Dengvaxia, reported the
dengue vaccine was found to heighten the risk of severe dengue in those who
have never had the mosquito-borne.
According to GMA News, (2018). Josephine, Krisha's mother, claimed that
her female offspring accustomed be a healthy kid and had ne'er been hospitalized.
But months once she got Dengvaxia shots she began to become sickly, perpetually
whiny of nausea, headaches, abdomen ache, and a sense of instinctive reflex. Due
to the symptoms, she had been absent from college again and again before her
hospitalization, Josephine aforesaid. Krisha had fallen unwell and was delivered
to the hospital, and on Oct eighteen, she died. Josephine told GMA News that
initially she didn't assume the anti-dengue vaccinum was the reason behind
Krisha's fatal health problem But once observation newscast reports regarding
many deaths of youngsters immunized with Dengvaxia, she completed that
perhaps, the vaccinum caused Krisha's health problem and ultimate death.
Based on GMA News, (2018), The mother of the 14-year-old, Grade seven
student in Quezon province is crying for justice over the death of her female
offspring, United Nations agency was immunized with Denvaxia, the polemical
anti-dengue vaccinum. Krizha Agonia, 14, died last Oct eighteen once being
hospitalized for one month at the Quezon centre in Lucena town.
According to American Psychological Association, (2018). People with
anxiety disorders respond to certain things or situations with fear and dread, as
well as physical signs of anxiety such as a pounding heart and sweating. People
with anxiety disorders respond to certain things or situations with fear and dread,
as well as physical signs of anxiety such as a pounding heart and sweating. For
people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and
can be crippling. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed if the persons response is not
appropriate for the situation, if the person cannot control the response or if the
anxiety interferes with normal functioning. Anxiety disorders can get worse if not
treated; however, effective treatments are available. People with this disorder have
feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Other
symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations and a feeling
of choking, which might make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack
or going crazy. Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves
overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. This
disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or
nothing to provoke the anxiety. The exact cause of anxiety disorders is not known;
but anxiety disorders like other forms of mental illness are not the result of personal
weakness, a character flaw or poor upbringing. As scientists continue their
research on mental illness, it is becoming clear that many of these disorders are
caused by a combination of factors, including biology and environmental stresses.
Chapter 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter discusses the research design used, descriptions of the sample
and population, the analysis method used for the study and the data collection
process.
RESEARCH DESIGN
The researchers study is a qualitative research. A qualitative research
design was used to understand social presence in the discussion board from the
faculty's perspectives. "Qualitative research is especially helpful when it provides
us with someone's perceptions of a situation that permits us to understand his or
her behavior" (Krathwohl, 1998). Qualitative data, with emphasis on people's
experiences, are well suited for finding the meanings they place on events and
processes. Moreover, qualitative research connects their perceptions to the social
world (Manen, 1977). The researchers use case study. A case study is
a research strategy and an empirical inquiry that investigates a phenomenon
within its real-life context. Case studies are based on an in-depth investigation of
a single individual, group or event to explore the causes of underlying principles.
In a case study, the researchers select the participants that experienced the
situation of what the researchers being study. The researcher will conduct a face
to face interview to 5 participants of the study. The case study can ask the
respondents to validate the researchers interpretation of their responses.
POPULATION OR SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
This study will evaluate five parents of selected both male and female
senior high school students from malinta national high school senior high that was
injected by dengvaxia, in this study the researchers employed the quota sampling
technique for the selection of participants. Quota sampling refers to select survey
participants that is a non probabilistics version of stratified sampling. This means
the researchers selects the parents participants because they have experience
being injected by dengvaxia besides, this strategy enables the researcher to collect
to gather useful information for answering the research question, face to face
interview will be done by the researchers.
RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
The respondents of this study are the parents living in Malinta, Valenzuela
City who are having their children injected by dengvaxia. The respondents is
parents of grade 11 students in Malinta National High School Senior High School.
The researchers choose five(5) parents as respondents.
RESEARCH LOCALE
The study will be conducted at Barangay Malinta that is located from
Valenzuela City. The five selected parents of students that injected by dengvaxia
will be interviewed in their house. The respondents will be injected face to face.
the researcher choose the place of implementation because it will give the
researcher the needed or important information about dengvaxia.
DATA GATHERING
In gathering data five(5) sub steps are needed to be considered
(1). Making questionnaire (2). Validation of questionnaire (3). Interviewing of
respondents (4). Interpretation of data (5). Conclusion and recommendation
Conclusion
Making Validation of Interviewing of Interpretation and
questionnaire qestionnaire respondents of data Recommenda
tion
The researcher will prepare the questionnaire for collecting and gathering
data or information, such as questionnaire. It is assured that the questionnaire that
will be used to collect data is accurate that’s why validation of questionnaire is
important. After the collection of necessary information and data, it will be
subjected by the researchers interpretation in the form of coding. Finally
demonstration of researchers conclusion and recommendation.
DATA INSTRUMENT AND TECHNIQUES
To provide reliable and credible data, researchers will use an interview and
questionnaire instrument to determine the emotional anxiety of parents of students
injected by dengvaxia.
DATA ANALYSIS
The analysis that the researchers will use to analyze the data is Case Study
analysis. The researchers decide that the Case Study because the study deals
about the emotional anxiety and it is the most compatible to their data because
they will conduct an interview. The researchers will determine the emotional
anxiety experienced by the parents of student injected by dengvaxia. As an
overview of how to analyse case study, researcher will look at method of analysis
as described by Kleiman (2014). Similar processes occur in other types of
qualitative research.
Step 1 Familiarization With The Data
To get a global understanding of the whole, the researchers read the interview tr
anscript in its whole. In order to divide the data into relevant parts or units, read
the interview transcript a second time-this time more slowly.
Step 2 Highlighting and Noting of Important Patterns
The researcher will incorporate, and make sense of those sections / units you ide
ntified as having a specific emphasis or content. Subject built functional sections
/ units into a process known as free creative variation.
Step 3 Data Sorting
Researchers will expand on the observations, providing explanations of the basic
meanings that have been discovered through the process of free imaginative var
[Link] researchers will really have to show that you can validate the precision
of all results by comparison to raw data.
Step 4 Review the Themes
Once the researchers have finished the data analysis, this will be accompanied b
y the researcher with a critical analysis of the work within the research study.
This critical analysis will include verification that:
a) specific, detailed explanations from the participants were collected
b) the phenomenological reduction was preserved throughout the study
c) basic definitions were discovered
d) the structure was expressed
e) the raw data checked the findings
