Spanning can be decided by the number of free variables in the reduced
echelon form.

For 1 free variable: it’s a line i.e. R​1


For 2: it’s a plane i.e R​2

The reduced echelon form of the matrices are

RE_A

1 0 0 0 there are no free variable


0 1 0 0 which implies columns span
0 0 1 0 R​4​.
0 0 0 1

RE_B

1.0000 0 0 -0.4762 0 there is one free variable


0 1.0000 0 -0.2976 0 so the columns don’t
0 0 1.0000 -0.4881 0 span R​4​.
0 0 0 0 1.0000

If we delete the fourth column then reduced echelon form would be

RE_B’
1 0 0 0 then the column vector
0 1 0 0 span R​4​.
0 0 1 0
0 0 0 1
RE_C
1.0000 0 -0.5385 0 0
0 1.0000 -0.1538 0 0
0 0 0 1.0000 0
0 0 0 0 1.0000

There is a free variable so the span is a line and not complete R​4​.

If we delete column 3 entries. Then the reduced echelon form will be

0 0 1 0
0 0 0 1

Now the columns span in R​4​.

Deleting more columns in B and C would result in a span of a line or a


plane.
