1. Scope of work.
Site Investigation works shall be carried out in following sequence:
1. Drilling 2 No. boreholes up to 6.0m depth and 4 No. boreholes up to 30.0m depth
below existing ground level.
2. Collecting information regarding the site location site map and the proposed type
and scale of construction in the site.
3. Conducting reconnaissance survey of the site gathering information regarding the
past and present usage of the land, surface topography, surface drainage and
geological morphology of the site.
4. Deploying drilling machine & equipment at predetermined location as agreed
between all the parties involved in the project.
5. Performing in-situ testing (Standard Penetration Test) at specified interval as per
project specification & transporting samples collected from site safely to laboratory
for further testing.
6. Conducting necessary laboratory testing as per the project specification.
7. Providing conclusion regarding the best fit foundation design and construction
practice to be adopted for the proposed project.
8. Providing report of investigation based on the field and laboratory test results.

2. Site Planning and Preparation
Preliminary site visit shall be conducted to identify the location of the boreholes. Necessary
No Objection Certificates (NOC's) from the concerned legal and regulatory authorities Viz
the Telephone, drainage and electrical shall be provided by the client M/s. Dhirham
Contracting prior to mobilization or commencement of work at the site.
Ground surface at borehole location will be flattened if required, prior to the mobilization of
the equipment to the location. In areas where utilities are expected (as per the NOC
document), before starting of drilling a service pit of 1.50x150x2.0m will be excavated to
ensure that no underground utilities exist at the point of drilling.
The machine is then set up on the BH location and the area around the location is
barricaded with safety cones and ribbons.
Drilling rigs will only be shifted to locations accessible by dry road, in case the locations are
not accessible or the ground is soft and loose, the rigs will wait till accessibility by the
client/contractor is provided.
Drilling area will be cordoned off and posted by relevant signs and precautions.
3. Work Methodology
3.1. Test Method
For drilling of boreholes a cable percussion drill rig and/or a rotary type of drill rig shall be
used.
BS 1377 Part 9 : 1990 "Methods of Test for Civil Engineering Purpose"
BS 5930 : 1999 "Codes of practices for site Investigation"

[Link] Procedure
A) Drilling
Exploratory holes (bore holes) shall be drilled at specified locations under the supervision
of experienced engineer having a wide experience of conductivity and supervising site
investigation work. Depending on the type of the strata encountered at the site; either for
the following drilling techniques shall be adopted.
[Link] Cable Percussion Boring
Light cable percussion boring is a common boring method, using a clay cutter for dry
cohesive soils and shell (baler for granular soil and chisel for breaking up a rock). The
drilling equipments are basically worked on a wire rope using the clutch of the winch for
percussion action, casings are installed at regular interval, depending upon the site
condition to prevent collapsing of the bore hole, generally water is used with betonite as a
drilling medium.
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) shall be carried out at 0.5m intervals up to 3.0m then
every 1.0m thereafter up to the rock level (1 or 2 consecutive refusal). The SPT consist of
driving a 50 mm external diameter thick walled Split Spoon Sampler into the bottom of bore
hole using a 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a height of 760mm. Initially the sampler is
driven 150 mm into the soil to be seated and to pass through disturb soil at the bottom of
the bore hole. The aggregate number of blows to drive the sampler over the final 300mm is
termed the "N" value and is considered indicative of the soil's in-situ relative density.
Where a penetration of 300mm was not achieved, due to the density or degree of
cementation of the deposits encountered, the number of blows and distance driven are
recorded on the Borehole Logs.
In cemented sand /gravelly formations and rock formations the standard "split spoon" SPT
sampler was replaced by a solid 60o cone, as permitted by the Standard. Boring in soil

Containing frequent medium to coarse grained gravel, boulders and cobbles the Standard
Penetration Test with 60o cone replacing cutting shoe, givens some indication of the
relative density in gravel.
A.2 Rotary Drilling with coring
Rotary drilling shall be carried out using rotary rigs. In rotary drilling, the borehole is
advanced by the rotary action of a drill bit attached at the end of hollow drill rods. The
drilling fluid which is pumped down to the bit through the hollow drill rods lubricates the bit
and flushes the drill debris up the borehole. The drilling fluid used is water mixed with
Bentonite.
Rotary coring is carried out once rock is encountered. Rotary coring consist of cutting a
cylinder rock using a double tube core barrels with a coring bit attached to the bottom of
outer barrel. The drilling fluid is used to cool the drill bit and to remove the cuttings and
flush them up the borehole outside the core barrel.
As soon a single core run is accomplished, core is removed from the barrel, core is
wrapped in polythene bags to prevent moisture loss, placed in wooden core box as per the
sequence of depth at which it was cored and transported to the laboratory for testing.
The driller shall record the observations during the course of testing at the site including the
type of the strata; the N values, which shall be verified by the site supervisor / engineer. A
brief description of the type of the sample shall be recorded by the driller at the site and
detailed inspection shall be carried out by the Geologists / Geotechnical Engineer at the
laboratory.

B.3 Ground Water Level Monitoring
a) Shallow Boreholes- To Measure the ground water level in shallow borehole
do the following procedures
1. If shallow borehole completed on same day first pull back the casing 10-20cm
and wait for 15 minutes to allow the ground water to come back to a stable level.
Then measure the depth to the water level by using ordinary measuring tap /
Dipmeter.
b) Deep Boreholes- In case of deep boreholes that take more than one working
day to complete, adopt the following methods
1) Take the water level measuring on the following morning before start of work
and end of each working day by using ordinary measuring tap I Dip meter.
2) Record the levels on driller's log and also mention the time each
measurement.
B.4 Ground Water Sampling
Ground water samples are collected as soon as the ground water regime is established
generally it is after 24 hours. Overnight water from the borehole is bailed out completely (3
to 5 times the boreholes volume), and the fresh representative water samples are collected
after rinsing in a clean bottle for three times.
The samples shall be collected as per BS 5930 and shall be tested as per BS 1377 Part
3:1990 for pH, Chloride content and Sulphate content.
C) Backfilling of Boreholes.
Backfilling of boreholes shall be done and comply as per BS 5930.

The responsibilities of all project management personnel shall be to control and direct on a
daily basis all resources and activities under them.
USTL has overall responsibility for the performance of the works . USTL safety incharge
based in the office will be responsible for operational HSE elements.
The drilling Supervisor/Driller has final responsibility for all safety and for taking all
decisions, which affect the safety of the equipment or its crew.
The USTL site supervisor is responsible for monitoring the activities of the site operations
and of coordinating any support or emergency response that is required. He is responsible
for ensuring all personnel on the project are suitably trained and that all safety certifications
and documentation and equipment are available. Supervisor I foreman will conduct START
talk with workers engaged in activity. Apart from START method statement and risk
assessment will be briefed to workers.
