Community Typologies Lesson Plan

The objectives are for students to identify different community typologies and compare/contrast them. The lesson will motivate students with a puzzle activity showing rural, urban and suburban communities. Students will then analyze similarities and differences between community types through a graphic organizer activity and presentation. Finally, the teacher will discuss key sociological perspectives on rural, urban, slum and suburban communities.

GRADE 12
Community Engagement, Solidarity and Citizenship
2nd Semester
Date: December 3, 2018

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, learners will able to:
1. Identify the different typologies in the community
2. Compare and contrast typologies in the communities.

II. Subject Matter:


A. Topic: Typologies (e.g., formal-informal, rural-urban, local-global, sectors, social spaces, etc.)

B. Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the integration of social science perspective
and community action initiatives.
C. Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to synthesize the integrative experience of implementing
community-action initiatives applying social sciences ideas and methods.
D. Learning Competencies: Identify the goals and scope of social work.

III. Procedure (Lesson Development):


A. Preliminary Activities
Prayer
Salutation
Checking of Attendance
Review of the previous lesson

B. Motivation
The learners will be given a puzzle activity which is entitled as FIT IT RIGHT! Wherein, students will be divided
into three groups and each group will need to put puzzle pieces as fast as they can. (Note: each group puzzle will form a
picture showing Rural, Urban and Suburban Community). The learners will give his/her observation regarding the puzzle
they made.

C. Statement of the Objective


At the end of the lesson, learners will able to:
1. Identify the different typologies in the community
2. Compare and contrast typologies in the communities.

D. Lesson Proper

A. Activity
The learner will be provided graphic organizer post in the board. The learner will be group according to:
Birth Month, Height, Size. The learner will write similarities and the contrasting factor they observe based on
the picture that has been formed in their puzzle activity. Each group will present their output to the group.

B. Analysis
What are the elements of the community?
How structure, dynamics, and processes affect out life in the community?
What are the things you consider in identifying the similarities and contrast in the community?
What type of community do you have?

C. Abstraction
Discuss the different typologies of community.
Slums – A densely populated area usually crowded and has dirty run-down housing.

Rural – Consists of agricultural lands, also referred as pre-industrial communities.

Urban – Pertains to highly industrialize communities.

Sub Urban – An area of land that has been divided on smaller areas on which houses were built.

D. Application
Group Activity: Group the students into three groups. Collaborative Learning with the Teacher. Each group will be given
2-3 minutes to present their output then the teacher will discuss the comparison and differences between the types of
community based on sociological theories and perspective.
Discuss the following question.
1. Discuss what is the difference between rural and urban/suburban?
2. Give example about rural, slums urban/suburban community.
