PART I: IMPORTANT POINTS IN WORK IMMERSION
Introduction
According to (Jacquiline Damasco,2019), Work Immersion is one of the course
requirements for graduation. A Senior High School student has to undergo Work Immersion in an
industry that directly relates to the student’s postsecondary goal. Through Work Immersion, the
students are exposed to and become familiar with work-related environment related to their field
of specialization to enhance their competence. Specifically, the students are able to: (i) gain
relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and workers; (ii)
appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in school; (iii)
enhance their technical knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich their skills in communications and human
relations; and (v) develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. These
prepare them to meet the needs and challenges of employment or higher education after graduation.
The word “immersion” as it applies to the K to 12 curriculum is defined in the Department
of Education (DepEd) Order No. 40, series of 2015:
“Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum consisting
of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation which the Grades 11 and 12 students will
undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided
by the school under the supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner.”
Immersion is done outside the school campus in a “Workplace Immersion Venue,” defined
as “the place where work immersion of students is done. Examples of work immersion venues
include offices, factories, shops and project sites.”
What could lead to confusion is that the word “immersion” actually has two meanings in
K to 12. The first meaning refers to a required SHS subject in the curriculum. The second meaning
refers not to a subject but to a preferred mode of delivery of Tech-Voc subjects.
Work Immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation. In the study of

institutions are faced with challenges particularly on the skills they produced which do not match
the needs of the industry. A significant number of graduates today are unable to fill the job
openings due to job-skill mismatch. A great number of these skills found lacking by companies
are taught in the academe that is, technical, human resource and conceptual skills. In addition to
that, these same skills can also be reinforced through on-the-job training programs. On-the-job
training (OJT) programs are course requirements providing an opportunity to apply the theories,
principles and ideas learned in the academe under supervision. These training programs expose
the students to work realities which will ideally hone their skills and prepare them once they get
out of the university or college. A study conducted by the People Management Association of the
Philippines (PMAP) in2006, emphasized the importance of an effective on-the-job training
program. Achievement of the OJT program objectives ensures the possibility of good performer
graduates. The opposite will most likely produce poor performer graduates thus, promoting job-
skill mismatch. One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners
the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the
world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s
development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject has been incorporated into the
curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities: to become familiar with the work
place; for employment simulation; and to apply their competencies in areas of
specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments. To achieve the above objectives,
Work Immersion is a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are
immersed in actual work environments such as workshops offices and laboratories in which their
prior training is relevant. Other possible venues for work immersion are on the teachers copy.”

Objectives of the Work Immersion
The main objective of work immersion is to acquaint the students formally to a real life
work place environment. This will help to explore the relationship between the knowledge & skills
acquired in college with those required in the working situations. This enables students to
understand and respond better to the market demand.
The K to 12 Basic Education programs’ purpose is to discover, improve and develop the
learners Learning Competencies and to guide the learners to pursue their chosen career. And to
develop a better nation. The work immersion is under the K to 12 curriculums. It gives
opportunities to the learners:
1.To develop a better communication.
2.To adapt a new environment.
3.To improve, develop, and apply their competencies.
4.To prepare them for employment.
Learners are distributed in different establishments, offices and Laboratories as their
workplace for their work immersion/actual job. Through company’s partnership, they are expected
to help the learners in their work immersion, to give them the opportunities, to have or experience
perform actual job, for new learning’s. To make the learners:
1. Improve their knowledge and skills to be more productive.
2.To develop a good communication and good relationship towards others.
3.To build up work ethics, attitudes, and the value of works.
During the work immersion in Senior High School, the learners develop a good social
interaction, that will help them to build-up and maintain a good relationship towards others, work
immersion gives them a chance to apply what they have learned about their specialization for their
improvement and development of their skill and to increase their knowledge and for the
preparation of employment, for proceeding in the higher education. The objectives written above
was guided by policy to:
1.Create an adaptable work immersion.
2.Give an optional work immersion.
3.Provide / give a safe and comfortable workplace.
Work immersion will help develop among the learners life and career skill,and will prepare
them to make decisions on postsecondary education or employment.Through partnership building,
DepEd hopes that the partner institutions will provide learners with work emmersion
opportunities,workplace or hands- on experience,and additional learning resources.It aims to make
the learners:
1.Appreciate the importance and application of principles and theories learned in school;
2.Enhance their technical knowledge and skills;
3.enrich their skills in communication and human relations;
4.Develops good work habits,attitudes, appreciation and respect for works.
Values and Attributes of a Student in a Work Immersion
It improves and builds new skills. Immersions will have students gain new skill sets and
improve their existing capabilities. It is also through immersion that students get to discover
themselves and jumpstart their professional growth. Students become good team players. A person
who works well with others can go places. Students who know this early on are better able to
improve their communication skills and can be an asset to the team in building projects. Students
become financially aware at an early age. By being exposed to the daily operations of a real work
environment, students learn how to think like an adult, manage their finances effectively, and be
exposed to acquiring other related skills such as budgeting and marketing. Students become goal
driven. Students have goals. Immersion trains them how to achieve these goals by giving them an
opportunity to work with and be supervised by professionals and highly creative people. These
people can inspire students to discover their capabilities.
Work immersion will develop many skills and values that would help them as they
transition from high school to real life. To assure the achievement of the above
objectives of Work Immersion, this policy serves to guide schools in:
1.Creating flexible work immersion arrangements for their learners;12
2.Providing options for work immersion that are relevant to learners’ purposes and needs;
3.Organizing work immersion opportunities for learners that are consistent with the diverse human
resource requirements of partner institutions for work immersion; and
4.Articulating the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic education when
building relationships with work immersion partners.
In the approved latest draft of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum,students that
choose to take the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood and the Arts andSports tracks are expected to
spend 1,404 hours outside campus, doing“Immersion.”
This total is divided into four. In the first half or semester of Grade 11, thestudent will
spend 270 hours in a company, field, organization, or other workplace. Inthe second half or
semester of Grade 11, s/he will spend another 270 hours. In thefirst half or semester of Grade 12,
s/he will do 324 hours.
In the final half or semester of Grade 12, the student will spend practically allthe time (or
540 hours) outside campus (except for a few monitoring or processingsessions on campus). In
effect, for much of three-fourths of his or her time and for awhole fourth of his or her time in SHS,
the student becomes a de facto full-timeemployee or worker in a workplace.
Our country has had a lot of experience with on-the-job training (OJT)programs on the
collegiate level. Unfortunately, many (if not most) college OJTstudents are assigned only to
insignificant jobs in a company (answering the phone,making photocopies, making coffee – that
sort of thing). Rarely are OJT studentsexpected to produce the same products that regular
employees produce.
CAREER GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
IMMERSION can be used as a facilitative tool for career counselling forstudents,
especially those in professional courses. By placing them in a real-worldwork scenario, it gives
them an opportunity to explore the kind of tasks and activitiesthey would like to do.
IMMERSION also matches the candidate’s profile with a list ofoccupations, which can be used
as a reference point for exploring opportunities.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNAL MOBILITY
IMMERSION highlights individuals’ self-awareness and provides a deeperunderstanding
of their interests and strengths in a work environment. It guides anindividual's career choices by
matching their interests and personality with various job profiles.
GRADE 12 Senior High School Students have started their work immersion related to their
selected academic track or their selected vocational course. The immersion trains students and
strengthen their skill or expertise for their work in the future. It is part of the K-12 program which
prepares students to work in companies. In the approved latest draft of the Senior High School
(SHS) curriculum, students that choose to take the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood and the
Academic tracks are expected to spend a given time hours outside campus, doing “Immersion.”
According to the Department of Education, this program is an 80-hour hands-on encounter which
Senior High students must experience to open them to the genuine working environment setting
and improve their abilities learned in school. The Department of Labor and Employment said work
this is an integral part of the K to 12 Program in fully realizing its goal to produce job-ready
graduates equipped with industry-based skills. DOLE strongly affirms that work immersion
contributes to the full realization of the objectives of the K to 12 Program.
